SOLVED: Well this is embarrassing. In my haste to set up my new monitor, I incorrectly assumed HDMI1 was the fastest port if indeed there was any difference.

Not only is there a difference, the difference is that HDMI1 is capped at 60Hz and furthermore doesn't support

You may get more fps but I think you will still have the same drop off because of the lack of vram.

Lowering graphic detail can help.

Totally agree, and I'm still planning to get the 5700 at least, but I can muddle through till 1st sep for the Nvidia announcement I think.

But the advice on the current state of play has been really useful. Thanks so much.

Yep, a friend has also recommended waiting for Nvidia, if only to enjoy the price drop on the 5700 if the Nvidia cards aren't worth it.
