New gpu install won't boot

Evening everyone.

I recently purchased a 5070 TI to upgrade from my existing 3070 TI. After installing and connecting the power cables, I turned it on only to find I had no display.
Opening up my case with the PC on showed the red VGA status light on my motherboard was permanently lit up. So I did the following:

Re-seated the GPU
Cleared CMOS using jumper and then taking the battery out for 30 minutes
Checked to see if there were any loose connections
Tried leaving the PC on just to see if there were any changes after a few minutes

No change, so I laid the PC on it's side so I could get a top down view of everything and noticed the GPU fans weren't spinning and wouldn't spin on boot.
I figured even if the GPU has a 0 RPM mode that it would still briefly spin on power up but it didn't.
Assuming there was some power issue, whilst the PC was on I simply pushed one of the 8 pin connectors that goes into the 12VHPWR adapter together slightly and the fans immediately kicked into gear.
I turned the PC off, turned it back on and low and behold everything was working fine and loaded to desktop.

At this point my pc only had the display attached and a keyboard in another room, so I powered it down, took it to my room, turned it on and..................fans don't power up and the red VGA light is back on.
So, I fully took that PCI-E cable out of my PSU, connected a new one and wired the GPU back up. Still the same problem.
It will sometimes spin the fans up if I move the PCI-E cables around particularly at the connection point to the adapter.

At this point I don't know if I am unlucky with multiple faulty PCI-E cables, a faulty 12VHPWR adapter or a faulty GPU. I contemplated buying one of those Corsair 12VHPWR PCI-E adapters for £20 (grrrr).

I'm going to reconnect the 3070 TI tomorrow afternoon and see if that works. If it does, then I'll be out of ideas.

Buy a cheap multimeter and test your PSU's output on that PCI-E power cable. Move the probes around and the plug as you test to make sure it keeps supplying power whilst you do so. That way you can have a modicum amount of certainty the PSU is OK without dropping a lot of cash.
 
Hmmmmmm, not that I want to actually splash out on a new PSU, but I did a bit of digging and noticed the RM850x with native 12v-2x6 seems to be on sale everywhere for £110 although it would seem that price might be ending today. I might just buy it from amazon and keep it unopened until I've tested my current PSU with a multimeter.

Still plan to test my 3070 TI later today with my current psu

Get the PSU use it to test. Send it back for refund or keep it. Up to you.
 
Are you using 2 x separate PCIE cables or 1 x daisy chain cable?

I would have just got the Corsair 12VHPWR cable myself. (your PSU uses type 4 cables?)
 
Two separate PCIE daisy chain cables since that's all my PSU originally came with. I was just going to zip tie unused daisy chain portion to make things look neater.

Yes my PSU uses type 4 cables.

LOL I might just buy the 12VHPWR cable as well and just return whatever isn't needed I guess
 
So wired up the 3070 TI again. Booted instantly

I'm really hoping that it's just the adapter that is funky and not the GPU itself :mad:

It works!

The Corsair adapter did the trick. I guess the one that came with the GPU was shoddy after all

Amazon offered me £13 refund to keep the PSU but even at £99 there isn't any point me keeping it now.

Perhaps if RAM wasn't costing an arm and leg I'd jump to AM5 and keep it, but at this point, I'll ride out AM4 for another year or so.

Going to keep the multimeter since it's a good tool to have on hand and only cost £8

You could contact MSI and see if they will send you a replacement adapter, will be nice to have if you ever sell the GPU.

Sig says MSI 5070 Ti Ventus 3X OC and looking at a unboxing vid it is one with 2x PCI-E connectors.

Yeah that's what I intend to do and see what they say. I shouldn't have to buy a £20 cable just to get the GPU to work and every little bit helps when it comes to resale value down the line

Already been answered but just to confirm it is a 2x pcie adapter that comes in the box with it

I would have bought the cable any way just to make the build look tidy.

The included adapter looks as ugly as ****. :(

I absolutely suck at cable management as it is and my PC is pretty much out of sight anyways so it didn't bother me too much.

When I eventually upgrade to AM5 though, she'll be out on display in a new fancy case, so it'll matter more then :D
