Hi I’m looking to make a new pc at the end of the year but is it worth pre ordering the new release of GPUs?

just when it comes end of year I don’t want an issue trying to get one

cheers

Honestly no idea. Last couple years has been terrible. Normally pre-ordering graphics cards isn't really a thing beyond "we've got a shipment of these cards coming in the next couple weeks so we're gonna stick them on the shop early"
But it all went horribly wrong with the 3000 series launch, specially the 3080 where they presold more than they ever got and Gibbo spent the last 2 years having to come up with alternative for people. Nightmare for everyone involved.

My guess is that even if there isn't the same huge imbalance between how many they have vs how many people want. They aren't going to risk the same situation and people are going to only be able to buy what is physically available. Which might mean having to camp out in the forum for a couple weeks waiting for the notification

myself i never preorder, no mining boom atm due to a few factors, no lockdown, so the drive to buy new gpu's will come from gamers and some scalpers, myself as usual will wait and see what arrives from all 3 of them, though intel is highly unlikely to get anywhere with its gpu's being first generation and buggy drivers for forseeable future, though they will give them away to gain market share if needs be

as @MCFC_ANDY says, it's probably best to wait it out.

Keep an eye on crypto closer to release, if people are not really mining then you'll probably be ok for getting a card on release.

You really want to wait for reviews to make sure you get the card that ticks the boxes for you at the price that's best for you. Not what people on here think (there's a lot of brand loyalty on these forums).

Based on past experience we won’t be offering pre order or certainly won’t take many as it’s too easy to get burnt now if AIBs decide to hike the prices up $100 plus after launch or it takes months or even a year plus to get the stock.

So won’t be any pre orders or very little it’s far to risky with the current GPU demand and the fact scalpers try to buy everything up.

The fact a £30,000 car oversells in just 40 minutes from launching shows the status of the current world and you can bet only half of those car orders were genuine buyers actually wanting the car as the other half will just be flippers.

With the manufacturers seemingly making increased used of paper launches any retailer offering pre-launch ordering is at risk of having customers who get disappointed either by price hikes or delays. Even Intel paper launched their Arc graphics card as it was only available in laptops as preorder when it was launched. Also take the Radeon 6800 series from what I have read Overclockers could probably have sold the whole initial European allocation of 6800 series just through their site, and when AMD told reviewers that there would be better supply in a few weeks that didn't pan out, https://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-rx-6800-xt-rx-6800-reportedly-terrible-launch-stock/

That being the case maybe you can offer members here an option to buy them? I mean not like you won’t sell out one way or the other, at least this way scalpers won’t be getting them.

Depends whether you are the kind of person who enjoys spending two years posting on the "Where's my 4080 order?" thread. If so, go for it - you'll make a lot of new friends over that time. :)
