new laptop memory problem

I have a Dell Precision M6500 workstation (Gray). It says it supports DDR 3 1333MHz.

I ordered some memory from crucial (2x8GB) which got here today.
The laptop supports up to 16GB.

I placed in the memory, and switched it on. I got the Dell screen but then the system froze completely. cannot press del/f2/space bar. nothing happens. Caps lock light does not even come on when I press the key.

Took out the memory and placed the old one back in - works fine obviously.

So I have requested a lower speed from crucial which they are doing. (also the crucial site shows that the memory I ordered is supported on the laptop which is why I ordered it)

question: what could be the reason for the laptop acting like that with this new memory?
would it harm the system at all when it freezes like that?

There has not been a BIOS update in over a year but it is the latest.

as for putting in one of the slots only, is a good question. I did not try that! Do you happen to know which slot should be the first one to put in the memory? I know some motherboards are configured to have memory slots filled in the right order/bank.

Very unlikely.

Book of words suggests there are 4 slots. A&B under the keyboard, C&D via an access panel in the bottom.

C&D is the one which has the memory slots. did not see the one under the keyboard and most likely it is not in use since the system has 4GB in total (2x2GB) as default

If it's the like the Lenovo W-series we get at work it may only enable all 4 slots with higher end CPUs. C&D will be the primary slots as they're more accessible.

If it has 4 Slots, supports 16Gb, then it obviously only supports 4Gb per slot, or otherwise it should work with 32Gb. Your problem is you are reaching the Maximum supported Ram, with half the slots. 4 4GBx1333Mhz sticks should work fine.

My old laptop had maximum 4Gb, bought a 4Gb stick to replace both 512's and It wouldn't work. Replaced them with 2 2Gb sticks and it worked fine. As a plus 2 2Gb sticks were cheaper then the 4Gb, I was just drawn in at the time due to it being 4Gb..

LOL WHUT!

A/B are the primary slots as the modules are installed and left there.

C/D are the expansion / upgrade slots.
Accessabilty is the key factor.
Easy access to upgrade.

Anyway,

Is it a dual or quad core laptop?

Dual

You need to swap that ram for 4x4gb modules.

Quad

Read the page, If its dual core it only supports 8Gb Maximum, so he would be replacing with 2*4Gbs, not 4.

If Its quad core then I have no clue whats wrong.

Its quad core.
In the system there is only 4GB....2x2GB in slots c and d.
Are you saying it supports Only 2GB per slot?
If so why are crucial offering differently?

I've returned them now for a refund.

Im saying 4Gb per slot. If maximum is 16Gb, with 4 slots, thats 4Gb a slot.

The 2Gb I said about was refering to my old dell laptop that died years ago!

Phone the Dell Customer Support, ask them to email you a quote for a 16GB memory upgrade, make sure they specify the Ram as you want to review its performance, then go buy the Ram somewhere else :)
