I literally just bought the Linksys WRT3200ACM today :/
In all honesty this is the same but with gaming features am I right? Is it really worth a £100 premium (yes I am a big gamer)? Just wondering as I researched routers yesterday before settling on the Linksys WRT3200ACM today.
Thanks for your purchase of the Linksys WRT3200ACM, it’s an excellent router for gaming
As to the question of what sets the WRT32X apart from the WRT3200ACM and all other routers on the market, the answer is that the firmware has been newly developed from scratch to suit the needs of gamers, and contains Killer Networking’s prioritisation engine. What this means in practise is that when operating in conjunction with PCs featuring a Killer E2200 or higher Ethernet adapter or Killer Wireless-N / Wireless AC 1435/1525/1535, the router’s firmware interfaces with the Killer software on the PC to ensure that Killer PCs are automatically detected by the router, and that any game packets coming from a Killer PC are given priority over all other traffic in the network. The benefit of this over just having Killer on the PC alone is that the router can instantly recognise and honour any prioritisation given to games by the Killer software on the PC. With any other router, the Killer network adapter on the PC can make sure it sends packets from the game ahead of lower priority traffic, but that only applies within the PCs own network stack; as soon as the packet is sent to the router, the router would know nothing about that prioritisation and would just handle the packet (and any other traffic from other devices in the network) according to whatever rules the manufacturer had set; meaning the game packets may not be the highest priority. With a WRT32X router and a Killer-enabled PC, you know that the game will always get priority, regardless of what other traffic exists in your local network. An additional ‘Router’ icon appears in the Killer software when it detects the WRT32X, allowing users to enable/disable Killer prioritisation and set bandwidth limits right from the Killer app. It also provides a shortcut to the WRT32X web interface for making more advanced changes
For independent assessment of the difference made by having Killer on both the PC and the router I’d suggest looking here:

As your current motherboard is not Killer enabled it would not have the Killer software running and so cannot interface with the router in quite the same way and provide the level of detailed packet-by packet information that the router uses to prioritise gaming packets from Killer PCs. You can still set manual prioritisation and it will still work excellently for gaming, but the most efficient prioritisation is only possible with a Killer network adapter. As you mentioned that you plan to upgrade the motherboard within the next 12 months, if you ensure that you choose a Killer-enabled motherboard at that time, then it would enable you to take full advantage of the WRT32X’s automatic prioritisation of Killer devices.
Outside of the Killer prioritisation the WRT32X has other features useful for gamers, such as OpenVPN client support, meaning the router can create a VPN tunnel to a server elsewhere, so that online opponents do not see the user’s real WAN IP address. Some unscrupulous online players attack the IP addresses of their opponents to gain an advantage, the VPN client support can help prevent that. In addition the completely new user interface is tailored for the needs of gamers and provides an easy at-a glance view of of the current and recent downstream/upstream bandwidth usage, the number of connected devices, the number of connected Killer devices etc. allowing users to easily see what’s connected, how much of the available internet bandwidth they’re using and easily adjust the prioritisation of non-killer devices. As already mentioned the WRT32X firmware is 100% new and tailored for gamers requirements; as further proof that it’s a new development, the Linksys App which can be used with WRT3200ACM and other models to allow management from smartphone, does not work with WRT32X because it is a completely separate platform. Management from tablets and smartphones is still possible as the WRT32X web interface dynamically resizes itself to accommodate different screen sizes, but it doesn’t work with our existing app & cloud platform as it’s something genuinely separate created purely for the gaming router.
