New MATX build, can't power on

I've just built a PC with the following:

Gigabyte G1 Sniper M5 (MATX)
Gigabyte GeForce GTX780
Intel 4770k
Corsair H90
2x 4GB Corsair Vengeance Pro
Samsung 840 Evo
Seasonic x-series 850w
BitFenix Phenom MATX case

When I plug in the kettle lead and flick the PSU switch to on, the power button on the mobo lights up a steady orange. If I press it or the case power button, the fans start for a fraction of a second and then immediately cut out. The orange light stays on the mobo, but no error codes are displayed at any point. The case doesn't have a speaker so I've no idea if any beeps are being emitted. It then won't do the fan spin thing again unless I turn the PSU off with its switch.

I've removed the GPU, SSD, and disconnected the case USB ports and LEDs, but still have the same issue. I've tried both RAM sticks separately, same deal.

What's left to try except for running it outside of the case? How do I identify which part is duff if it's not a short on the case? I don't have access to other PCs to test anything in.

Is the 8-pin power cable connected (top left of the motherboard)? I had this issue and that was the problem.

Both Mobo power cables connected (20pin and 8 pin), the 8 pin is behind the H90 rad so it's difficult to check if it's seated correctly but I made sure it was snugly in before fitting the cooler.

*edit*

Just checked with a flashlight and both connectors are definitely all the way in.

Get hold of a motherboard speaker. Shouldn't be expensive and will plug in to the motherboard as normal. Might give you a better idea of what's going on.

Does the motherboard not have any sort of POST/diagnostic LEDs on board? I thought most did these days.

It does, but they don't even get chance to light up, it's literally less than 1/2 a second before it cuts out. I've just noticed that the PSU makes a click when it happens.

I'm screwing directly into the metal standoffs that came with the case, are these supposed to be insulated with rubber grommets or something like that? There were some in the case bits but I thought they were for HDD vibration.

Once you test the psu , remove the the GPU use the IGPU and try booting that way. Then the 1 stick at a time test with the memory.
Be sure as you tinker to check all connections and stuff to see all wired up correctly.

Good luck.

It's a rather lengthy procedure, however double check you've installed the correct motherboard standoffs and there isn't an extra one shorting out the motherboard. Known this to happen to a few people now.

It appears to be a dead PSU - just tried the paperclip test with it out of the case and nothing else attached - the fan starts to rotate then there's a click and it immediately stops. This is with the switch set to "normal" mode which is meant to run the fan no matter what the draw is (the PSU has a hybrid mode that doesn't run the fan until it reaches a certain temp).

Annoying, but hopefully a replacement PSU is all that's required.
