New member, First build! What are your thoughts?

Z68ap-d3, 2500K or 2600K, gelid tranquillo cooler - best combo imho.

that's exactly what I'm going for (2600)!!!!

If you're going for an SSD as a boot drive, then getting a 2TB is a good idea for storage and is something you could buy whenever if its a good price.

Similiarly if you see a good deal on RAM, that is something unlikely to change and there are usually decent offers on.

I think I might go for th HDD then. Just hope it will still be available next week!!!

Cant remember (threads far to long to look) but you realize the Gigabyte only has a HDMI output? if you are using an existing GFX card/or buying a new one? then thats cool as you want to be able to connect it to your screen:)

Or you can use a HDMI to DVI cable if thats what your monitor takes?

Why not just get 8GB RAM to start with and get another 8GB later if you need it? usually works out at about the same price

Also if you are using this for music editing isn't it wise to get a soundcard?

I might do that, see how my money situation is when I come to buy it.

I think I did mention at the start of this thread that I will be using an external soundcard.

ok, now that I'm over the fact the bargain was taken away from me at the last minute!! I'm thinking of getting the Seagate Barracuda 1TB. For some reason I don't trust Seagate and really want a WD HDD......but I have no reason for not trusting them as I have no experience of using them!!!

Are seagate a good brand?

Quick question, is their any way of testing a mobo to see if it's "alive" using only the PSU or do I need the CPU and RAM as well?

Hi again! Just thought I would keep this thread up to date...more for my own benefit but if anyone else is interested then here we go. So I haven't been on here that much lately but I've been busy between buying a new house and getting a new job!! I almost have all the parts, all I need is the CPU and an SSD which I will buy at the end of this month! I can't wait to get this PC up and running, it feels like forever ago when I started this project! Anyway, this is what the set-up will be.

Mobo
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 (bought)
CPU
i7 2600k or i7 3770k depending on any offers on at end of this month.
PSU
Cooler Master Silent Pro 600 Gold (bought)
RAM
Crucial Ballistix sport 16gb 1600Mhz (bought)
HDD
WD green 1TB 64Mb cache *single platter* (bought)
SSD
Crucial RealSSD M4 64gb or 128gb depending on offers at the end of this month.
CD drive
Pioneer 24x DVR-S19LBK (bought)

Extras (bought)
Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler
Noctua NF-R8
Truequiet 120mm Fan
Logitech K360 Wireless Keyboard
Logitech Wireless mouse

Not yet bought
Wireless network card
Asus Xonar DG 5.1
Asus HD 6450 SILENT EDITION 1024MB

The only thing I'm not sure on is the wireless card. I'm thinking this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-043-AS&groupid=46&catid=1597&subcat= or would a cheaper one do?
