NEW MSI B550 UNIFY better than X570 UNIFY??

Hi m.2 arrangement is a little hard to understand if anyone can answer

If I use 2 PCIe 4.0 SSDs in slots 1 and 2 at gen 4 will the GPU slot run at x8 ?

Thanks

First off you want to use slot 1 and 4, with the Unify, and it will run full speed. Don't have Manual in front of me... Least I'm using slot 1 and 4 and oh ya slot 1 pcie 4 slot 4 pcie 3

I've had one of these this weekend and had horrible coil whine - was like a light crackling which got worse when you moved the mouse, then once you put any load on the CPU it got louder and louder. Also AIDA64 mem/cache test would produce loud chirping noises. Just can't live with it so I've already returned it.

Oh on top of that.. is it normal for all of the M.2 heatsinks to be quite loose? - They were all wobbling about and tightening the screws seemed to make no difference.

Aside from that, it booted up my 5800x nicely with 4x8GB DIMMs @3600 CL16 (just set by XMP), so I was fairly happy with that.. but the noise was just too much for me to put up with.

I happened to have a failed cancellation so I've got a second one that I was about to return, but that seems to have a far later serial number and MNK according to the sticker on the box - maybe they improved the issues later on (serial number was about 200 later). Is it worth trying that board out and risking the return being "open box" (supplier might charge me for the return... I've never ordered from them before) or shall I just cut my losses and go for a different B550 (or x570) board?

Well I know there have been a few people with coil whine - mine while has some ever so slightly didnt produce anything like you described or others. I could hear it if I didnt have fans running and case open and my ear near the vrms ... basically its fine for me (I got the b550 version). The m2 slots did have a bit of play in them but remember there are thermal pads on there (both sides) and once you stick the nvme in there and tighten the screw it felt pretty secure and I also can feel the 'heatsink' the plate and it gets warm so I think it is doing its job. To be honest I really like the board (nice look etc). But I wouldnt like coil whine least excessive.
I'm not sure if the psu would matter with it or not.

Hard to say if you should give this one a whirl or not. I think if I wasnt going to use this board Id go with the asus b550 E - I know they talked about mouse disconnects but we know now a bios update has helped this ... anyways ... oh btw check some previous posts about one guy slightly tightening the screw on the heatsinks - I did mine but he said you got to be careful not to break a screw or something (it did not difference to me but again coil whine is negligible for me least for me keeping the system).

Thanks for the reply. The VRM screws at the back were also loose, and I tightened them as much as I felt comfortable doing.. it seemed to make no difference to the buzzing. It's worth saying my current mobo (Z97 with the 4790k in my sig) does have some minor whine when you put it under load, but you have to turn off all the fans and stick your ear next to the mobo to hear it. With the B550, I could hear the buzzing just moving the mouse even with the side on. I'm still tempted to give the second mobo a try as it sounds like I may have just had a bad example.

I've been looking at the Asus strix b550-f wifi (and the b550-E too) and but saw some people having issues with the onboard ethernet due to some bug with the intel i225-v.. seems you can't win with any of these boards.. there's always some risk that there's some flaw with them! Either way, going to try to make a decision today as it's stopping me using my shiny new 5800x :)

Hey Alex how you doing? Think I'm finally done with my build. A bit of coil whine from the gpu, but it appears normal as my last one did the same. Had a bad dimm so had to get that exchanged but alas think it's done. Only 5 months since I started getting parts
(don't mind my kid squealing in the background... That's not the coil whine I'm talking about

Looks good mate glad you finally got it all working how you want it :)

I got a X570 Unify for my second rig and I have to say so far I am not that impressed. Niggles so far.

- I get no bios screen unless I boot up with a display port cable and set the bios to csm. Which is a pain as this rig (HTPC) is plugged into a TV, at the moment I am using a 1050Ti
- Bluetooth keeps dropping out for my wireless keyboard. I have just updated the Bios so I will see if this fixes it.
- Windows would not install via the usb stick when plugged into the USB 3.0 header and it would only work when I switched to a USB 2.0 header. I got a 0X8007025D error.

The BIOS thing might be the tv. My tv doesn’t wake up in time to show it with ... well any of our systems really. Same system attached to a pc monitor and it behaves as normal.

No idea about the rest, we have two of these boards now and I’m really happy so far.

(Also w00t! This is my 1000th post!)

No its not the tv, it does the same thing on the monitor. I thought I had a faulty bit of hardware at first as no bios came up until I used a display port cable.
