I'm thinking of setting up a NAS.

Pretty new to all this and need a bit of guidance.

My plan is to basically move everything I have on my PC onto it. Movies, music etc

Does anyone have any cheap recommendations? I've got my eye on the NSA325.

I have the Synology DS213 with 2 x 2TB WD drives in there in RAID1 for all of my media, photos etc and I can't recommend it highly enough!

However, the Synology unit's aren't what you might call "cheap"!!

In my experience though, it's worth paying the extra if you are going to be using it a lot! I used to have a Buffalo NAS and while it worked OK, it was painfully slow to use as far as the user interface goes!

I guess it all depends on your budget and what size and how many drives you want in there!

If looking at the Synology range (particulary the DS213 as Stevie mentioned) then look at the possibility of a Home Server too... about the same price if not cheaper.

Having a gigabit network will really help if you're backing up to the NAS or just bouncing big files around. I biought a NAS and the network was so slow I had to upgrade to keep up.
To get the most out of the NAS, gigabit is the way to go.

I just got a WD MyBookLive 3TB, upgraded my Switches to gigabit 5 ports and now stream my videos, music and access files to either my pc, PS3, laptop, tablet or SGS2, total cost was under £170 all in.
