Hey,

I really need some help here.

Quick breakdown.

My current PC (but not for long hopefully) runs Windows 10 Home. This is going to my Son once I've built my new one.

My new PC is going to be built over the next few days. I want Windows 11 on it and I 'may' purchase a code from a website to do this. I've been told that I need to use the media creation tool to create a bootable copy of Windows. However I 'think' I can only do this from my current PC which runs W10H.

Questions:
  1. How do I get Windows 11 on the new PC if my current one is W10H. (ps. I really don't want to have to spend £150).
  2. How do I do a fresh wipe of my old PC for my Son?
    • Some drives I'll take with me
    • I want a clean Windows version for him
    • I doubt this current machine can run W11 (though happy to be proved wrong).

My current PC is this:
Intel I5-3570 3.4GHz. 16 Gig ram.

Regards

Firstly windows media creation tool
Is only one method of making a bootable windows usb installer
Use rufus instead
On a pc no matter what version of windows installed
Open rufus
Choose the download option that's to the right of
Please select disk or iso version
Once it's downloaded a small file you will get a drop down box open
Select windows 11 or whichever version you want
It will fetch it for you and make your bootable usb

Rufus also has an option to create
A usb that bypasses tpm and other compatibility checks
So you can install on older hardware that doesn't pass
Microsoft windows 11 checks

For your son
Try settings/recovery/reset
Choose to reset everything including removing your apps etc
Or simply wipe it using the rufus usb
For a totally new installation

Thank you. Will take a look at that and see how it goes.

Its always this part that worries me most!

That's why I have image backups of everything
Something goes wrong it takes me
Three minutes to restore an image backup
And am up and running again
Image backup? Is that the same as just a backup?

If so, what do you do on massive drives? Doesnt that require another massive drive?

Image backup is a snapshot of the whole pc
Operating system, installed software, drivers etc
It can return the pc to full working order
And with all your stuff on it too
Yes if got massive drives you need somewhere to store the image
Though the images can be compressed
So if you have say 100gb on your Operating system drive
Using macrium reflect software
Normal compression level my image would be about 35gb Or so
Never tried maximum compression To see
How small it can make it as got plenty storage space

Hey.

I seem to be struggling with this. On the first attempted download it told me there wasn't enough space despite me just clearing the USB that is a 14gig drive.

I thought I may need to format it, so I've done that and then restarted the download process. Popped out, come back and Rufus windown is telling me it's done. Click close. Open drive and no file!

Is it some sort of hidden file that will be detected upon boot or should I see something there?

Regards

you should be able to see the setup files on the usb
rufus formats it for you
as long as the format options not unticked
just going for dinner
will leave rufus to download windows 11 and
see what happens

edit
did you get pop up box with windows version to choose?

Hey. Really appreciate the help here. Thank you.

Yeah. went through all the steps and choices. Using this website to do it:

It seems to work. It was downloading something as I left. It takes 5 seconds for each of the menu options to come through.... version, bit type, language etc. So I made sure I stayed for all of them.

I formated it myself via windows this time as I assumed Rusus would have done that.

Regards

yep just tested it
versio,type,language etc
then asks where you want to save the iso file
once its finished downloading the iso
it should progress to writing the iso to usb
that might be the point where it has the options
to disable tpm and windows compatibility checking
mines not finished downloading so cant see that yet
it will reformat the usb if it needs to

I'm trying again too.

When it asks me 'where to save the iso file', I have to click the USB right?.

I did that and it's downloading again. One thing I have noticed, right at the bottom of the window it's telling me 'no image selected'. Is that right?

sorry had to go for dinner
no dont save it to the usb drive
save it to hard drive
if rufus needs to format the usb you cant save the iso there
for some reason my download timed out
while i was having dinner so trying again
no image selected is fine since the iso hasnt downloaded

Okay. thanks. Will save it elsewhere to start.

*Edit*

I think that might have been where I was going wrong. It's now given me a different option and is now 'copying files' rather than downloading them.

Fingers crossed.

once finished downloading
just a case of press start at the bottom
then you will get a pop up that allows removing windows requirements
for tpm etc
and for needing an online account to set up windows
i would tick the top 2 options

edit
you could also disable privacy option
i dont as using windows insider previews
so i need to allow sending data to microsoft

Thanks. Either my PC is slow or my USB is slow (or both thinking about it). Not even half way through copying yet. But will check those options.

if it finished downloading the iso
you can check by looking at downloads or wherever
you put it
then any problems you can start again but
use select iso instead of download it
then just browse to c/downloads or wherever you downloaded to
so dont need to download it again

I think it's down.

I had the options you printed above earlier in the process.

My screen now looks like this.

Red is your picure. Yellow/Orange is Rufus after it's told me it's finished. Blue is what is now on the drive.

Is that done?
