NEW PC BUILD NOT SHUTTING DOWN OR RESTARTING PROPERLY

I have just finished building my pc & installed windows vista.

However, when I choose shutdown or the PC needs to restart during installtion the system isn't shutting down properly.

What happens is that when it shuts down or restarts the monitor goes blank as if it's not receiving a signal but the system stays on & the fans, etc, stay on.

I have to press the power button for more than 4 seconds to turn of the system then switch it back on manually.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Hi are you shutting vista down from the start menu as I panicked yesterday that my machine was not working properly.

Yes I am using the shutdown button.

However, when the system needs to restart when an install is happening it doesn't do.

Like I say the screen goes blank but the system doesn't actually restart or turn off as the fans, etc, keep working.

I have to manually switch it off & back on again.

It sounds like a motherboard or BIOS problem. Try updating your BIOS to the latest version. Also check that the power settings in your BIOS are correct.

Windows Visa home premium 64 Bit.

Mobo: Asus P5N32E-SLi

On Vista, the default shutdown action is 'sleep mode', which doesn't actually power off the PC.

Also might be worth checking if the cables from the power\reset switch to the motherboard are the right way round.

If I remember correctly, sometimes flipping these round helps.

What do you mean regarding the reset switch?

The PSU I have is the Corsair 620 watt & has no switches on at all.

This is connected to the 24 pin power connector on the mobo & the 8 pin connector is also connected.

I think tripitaka means the reset and on/off switches on the front of your case that are connected to your motherboard. These usually consist of a few small plastic plugs that you can check are in the right place from a diagram in your motherboard manual.

I know there is a power connector & a reset connector from the case.

Do you think it's the reset connector on the wrong way?

Possibly. I believe the buttons sometimes misbehave if these connectors are the wrong way round.
