Hi All,

Looking to build myself a new machine for about £1000 which will be able to handle anything current that is thrown at it on a 23" high res monitor but will still be able to handle it self for another 3 years or so with minimal upgrading, maybe more RAM or new Graphics in a couple of years.

Any suggestions on where i could save money or maybe get something a little better for the price?

All the components are from OcUK and then come in at about £1100

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard

Corsair Graphite 600T Midi Tower Case - Black

OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C8 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (OCZ3G1600LV6GK)

Akasa PowerMax 850W Power Supply

Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler (Socket LGA775/1156/1366/AM2/AM3)

Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD6402AAEX)

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)

Cheers,
Martin

the psu is made by one of the best- seasonic.

the ram is less rubbish.

and the samsung F3 is a single platter drive, and is very fast.

and the 1gb GTX460 is just as fast as a 5850, look at some reviews, http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18163136

At higher resolutions I'd still lean towards the 5850:

I'd also suggest going with this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-003-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411

Comes slightly overclocked and with CoDMW2 for only £6 extra.

i agree with the refined spec. gigabyte make a good board (though this time round i took the asus as you had in your basket). the ocz ram is poor, i took the cheap corsair xms3 and it works a treat.

but as his first post says, in three years he could add a second for SLI were it scales much better than crossfire.

and they are cheaper, last week the XFX was £199.99, which was a very good price, now its gone back up.

Personally I'm still more of a fan of single graphics cards setups, less heat, power usage, noise etc. If the OP is happy enough to go SLI in a couple of years time then yeah I suppose the GTX option might offer slightly better long term value for money. However I still believe the HIS card is decent value at £217 if they're going to be gaming on a 1080p screen. :)

Yep, got to say the plan was to go Sli when the price of the card starts to drop to get a cheap boost to performance in maybe 1 and a half to two years time

Thanks for the info on the ram, that and the motherboard where the two pieces where I was really unsure of how cheap to go while still keeping a decent piece of kit with out going to pricey.

Regarding the hard drive, size isn't massively important 250 gb would do as
I have a file server, speed is important though. An SSD would be great but the price just pushes the machine way out of my price range.

Ive put the thermal paste down but as im using the corsair CPU cooler is it still needed?

I believe from other peoples reports that the corsair has some pre-applied to it, but for the sake of £5 its worth having a tube incase you ever remove and remount the cooler.

and SLI in a few years time(pick up a second hand GTX460) is what I would do, smart move.

thanks for the advice always nice to fine tune a build with other suggestions, as soon as the case is available i will be purchasing the system.

Cant wait i do love a new build
