hi everyone, im currently in the process of buying a computer for my 14 year old boy to play world of warcraft with me for xmas, this will be the main game played so i'm aiming for something that will play this comfortably but not worried if its Full graphics. I currently have a geforce 9800gt which can be used for this pc, i have spare ram also but they appear to be ddr2 and i see no dd2 motherboards available. and im looking to spend no more than £250, i know this is a small budget, so please bare with me

so far I have :

* "Primo 500i" Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad DDR3 Ready Barebones - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-269-OK
* Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6600 "LGA775 Core 2" 3.06GHz - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-388-IN
* Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit. - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-095-KS

I built my own computer around 4-5 years ago and cannot remember what else i would need to purchase to get this barebones system up and running?

Sorry for my ramblings i hope someone can decipher what i've said.

Best to avoid investing in old hardware. Have you considered going second hand? A lot more bang for buck!

Could get a Q6600/mobo/ram for £100.

Then buy a cheap £30 case, a branded quality PSU for £40. Brings us upto £170.

You then need a hard drive... which is going to be difficult as the prices are sky high. Best to find a second hand low capacity sata drive. Save some ££

If you need an optical drive... they're cheap enough at around £15.

You then come into the problem with the graphics card.

If you have an old sata hard drive you could transfer across. Spend the cash on the best GPU you can afford.

You missed out the graphics card and HDD from your initial build. The barebones only come with, case, psu and motherboard.

Hey, thanks for your fast reply :)

I actually have an old sata hd that i can use for this build and the graphics card I have a geforce 9800 gt that can be used for this build, also i believe i have an old optical drive laying around somewhere lol.

i've looked locally for second hand pc's and have had no luck at all :( ebay is bloody confusing for whole pc systems i find. i am going to make a cup of tea and look into what you have said above

ok. hopefully i've understood and updated my build correctly.

Remembering I have a spare hdd and a 9800gt. This works out to £187.93 which is within budget. what about cables and compound to secure processor etc? and processor fan etc. i'm lost on the rest of it :)

Little problem you have there is that your CPU is socket 1155 and the motherboard is AM3+. Easy enough fix though.

Ill spec you up a little something now.

Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £95.99

MSI H61M-E33 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 REVISION** £46.99

Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-430CXUKV2) £39.98

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/4GX) £19.98

Sub Total : £169.12
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £10.00

That leaves you £40 for a case of your choice.

Or if you want cheaper, you can go AMD.

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 960T Black Edition "95W Edition" 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £95.99

Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-430CXUKV2) £39.98

Asus M5A78L-M LX AMD 760G (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £38.98

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/4GX) £19.98

The first system has a lot more headroom for upgrades in the future though, so it would probably be best to go with that.

awaits stulid to spec a monster £250 build :)

that said Riks above does look promising ;)

What about:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £84.98
1 x Intel Pentium G620 2.60GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £52.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-430CXUKV2) £39.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £35.99
1 x BitFenix Merc Alpha Gaming Case - Black £32.99
Total : £261.94 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Very similar to the above, but for just £10 over budget you get a great motherboard, which will allow for upgrades to an i5 in the future :) and 8GB of RAM

Alternatively, as above an i3 and H61 motherboard will give you a better CPU for a similar price.

EDIT: I would strongly recommend avoiding AMD for now, Intel are better and offer better upgrade path at the moment. For a ~£200 system use my spec with the H61 Motherboard:

sata cables, but usually a couple come with the mobo

the i3 retail unit comes with a heatsink with pre--applied paste - that should be fine for this rig :)

Thanks a lot :)

I'm gonna order this as soon as i get home from work, was gonna be ordering it now, but i've left my card at work, doh!

Good choice. At least with that, if your son decides he wants more power, its simple enough to upgrade to a P67/ Z68 motherboard and then an i5-2500k/ i7-2600k/ i7-2700k.

btw, after ordering all this as you've all been so helpful, i think ill be back to upgrade my pc. lol to think, i ordered my very first PC from you years ago, now i'm doing the same for my son :)

Good choice on the parts! Couldn't have done any better for the money... at all!

I built up a system last week using every single one of those components. Tell a lie... I used Corsair memory. However the PSU, Mobo & CPU were all the same.

They all go together very nicely.

What case did you opt for in the end?

If you need a hand assembling... you know where to come.

P.S. Is your age on your profile correct?
