Had some geat advice here in October last year and as a result, waited to do a new build, pushed my E6400 a little higher and bought a new graphics card (went to a 9800GT, from a 7800GS this was a wonder).

Now CPUs have settled a bit I am looking, finally, to do a new build. I might wait and see if the AM3 CPUs come down a bit but I wondered whether these bits would sit together ok and whether any other bits would work better.

Main PC use, gaming, web work, light PSing. Don't mind a little overclock. Happy to build my own (with the help of strong drink).

Advice appreciated.

Seems like a nice little setup. A 4870 might serve you better than the gtx 260 in terms of heat?

the 260's dont run that hot from my experience.

Looks like a good build, is the soundcard really necessary ? could get more performance with a bit of juggling.

EDIT:

Comes in a fair bit cheaper (could keep that soundcard if you really wanted lol) and with a better chipset + GPU

BicBC's suggestion is good and it will save you a bit too... one thing I would change on it is the graphics card though! The one comes in a stock cooler/fan and it is like a vacuum cleaner inside your case when it fires up.. I personally would go and get yourself this version of it instead:

HIS ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

It is about a tenner more, but it performs better and you will get a lot less noise from it :)

PS. If you are patient and you can wait till after 13th August (2weeks) you will be in for a good surprise. All the current Phenom II's will come down further in price because of the of the AMD Phenom II 965 release. If you are not urgent, then you should wait a bit.

I'm waiting for it come out before buying my parts, I'm thinking of building a new rig myself!

Thanks guys :)

BigBC that looks a good setup.

I do fancy the 193 as a case, I've got a Lian Li for my other build.

I was after the soundcard as I run most music from my PC, but I do have an XFi in my current box so I might use onboard for that and swap it into my new build. I've read good things about that card though.

Good points on the graphics, probably get more performance from ATI. I had a bit of a moment with two different 4850s which is why I lurched towards a BFG and a lifetime warranty but bang for buck wise I guess an ATI is the way to go?

Is the better Gigabyte board worth the extra? I do plan a modest overclock (as I have on my current box) but nothing in the way of what many people here would do.

I was looking at the pre overclocked bundles, would anyone recommend them?

Thanks Pakjai too, I shall certainly wait and see what happens with prices as I am not desperate to build this.

If your going to spend that extra on a GPU the I would suggest a GTX275 as they generally run cooler/quiter anyway and from my exprience perform better (though most say theyre the same).

Bang for buck wise AMD and ATi are normally always the way to go - depends what your doing with it but they normally rack up pretty well to Intel/nVidia for less.

Unless you have really top notch speaker system then the sound card wont make a noticeable difference; not one that warrants the price anway.

The extra money on the mobo is well spent especially if your considering overclocking.

The Pre-overclocked bundles are good if you dont understand/dont have the time to overclock them yourself, otherwise its worth saving the cash imo.

Great, thanks.

I have a set of these

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-001-AE&tool=3

but I think I will take my Xfi out of my other box and save a few quid there!

I understand the basics of overclocking, having practiced on my current CPU, so I can save the money I'd theoretically spend on an overclocked bundle and put it towards the motherboard.

I shall go off and read some 275 reviews.

Really helpful, thanks.
