New pre-built system temp problem!

Come on guys with the volume of systems places like OcUK produce there are bound to be the odd one slip through the net give them a call this is there error and they will fix it. They should pay for the shipping costs as it it there fault.

Im sure one of the Ocuk team will be along to comment in the morning as well.

Of course, humans make errors. However OcUK claim their pre-builds are tested and stable. 2 minutes of prime should have alerted the assembler that something wasn't right.

Either he tested it, saw the massively high temps, and decided to package and send it regardless. Or didn't test it at all. There's a big difference between complacency and a simple mistake, even more so when you're talking about a £700 PC.

Hi All,

Thought I'd better put the record straight on this as I don't want OCUK to be shown in a negative light for something they haven't done.

I made a mistake with saying that the back plate was fitted incorrectly because in fact it hasn't. The adhesive pad shown in my pic is supposed to be used to fit to a different board socket type (can't remember the number as I type this) but for socket 1156 which my board is the plate has indeed been fitted correctly. Now If the pad shown should have been removed or not I don't know?

I spoke to OCUK and agreed that I would try to reseat the CPU cooler myself as it may have come loose some how in transit even though it does feel really secure but it is possible I guess and they guaranteed it wouldn't affect my warranty. Unfortunately I couldn't do it just yet as I didn't have any thermal compound to re-apply to the CPU but I ordered some MX-4 and it arrived this morning but like an idiot I forgot to get some paste remover with it so had to order some which should turn up Monday I hope.

The whole experience has been really frustrating so far, I've got this great new PC to play with but I'm to afraid to use it as any load above 30% and the CPU gets too hot and starts throttling back and I don't want to cause any permanent damage!!

I'm just praying that after I do re-fit the cooler the temps become stable because if not that means the system would have left OCUK without being properly tested in the first place and I would have wasted a week and another £20 to find out.

if you assemble it yourself from a stack of boxed and sealed components ...
the other thing I learnt working in a computer shop is that some companies
pay less and accept a higher level of returns / customer hassle
I negotiated a very good margin with a well known monitor OEM
(this was in the days when a 21" would cost £2500)
and they just offloaded all their ex-rma junk on to me
thereby making a tidy sum whilst keeping my competitors (their big accounts) happy
as my customers and I went through hell

I bought the same system as you and had the same problem. My build came with a Titan Fenrir cooler which had come loose during transit. I also called support and they asked my me to fit the cooler again (I asked them for some thermal paste which they mailed me foc) which i did but it did not fix the problem. It turned out that my cooler base was uneven and would not sit correctly on the cpu no matter which way i tried. After RMA on the faulty cooler i fitted the new one and problem was solved. Idle temps 34c, Prime95 100% load 68c.
Good luck getting it sorted mate.

Shame on u OCUK

it is mounted the correct way round.

you only mount it the other way round if its on 1366

there are sticky pads both sides to accomodate the multiple mounting options.

i would go out on a limb and say that the cooler has been knocked in transit and that the retention bracket may be bent.

is there any play in the cooler? does it move around or is it solid?

i suggest contacting system support channels here, or posting in the customer service section here

Hi rjkoneill,

I've already spoken to system support and agreed to try to re-seat the cooler though I'm still waiting for the compound remover to turn up (hopefully be here tomorrow).

To be honest the cooler seems solid but I'm going to take it off tonight in readiness for and tomorrow and check it out. In a way I hope I find something obvious that would explain things.

Just thought I'd post an update as I've now re-fitted the CPU cooler and my temps have come right down which is a relief :).

at Idle they are 42c 39c 40c 37c
at 100% load they are 87c 83c 81c 82c

The above temps is with both the side panels off as I wanted to check ASAP.

Do these temps seem good enough?

Hi, I think I would still say they are a touch high though. I would try with the sides on and see which way the temps go, up or down.

Thanks for the reply.

I found I hadn't screwed one of the cooler mount screws properly which I've now done and all is definitely secure. With both side panels on my temps are now:

Idle: 41c 39c 39c 38c
100%: 81c 79c 78c 75c

Though worryingly I'm getting hardware errors under Prime 95 testing but not every time.

Quick update:

The system is being picked up for repair tomorrow as discussed with support as they've agreed the system is not performing as it should.

Just want to say so far the OCUK support staff have been a pleasure to deal with, very professional and efficient.

Sorry to drag this thread back in to existence but I want to query something?

I should be getting my system back tomorrow as it has completed it's testing at OCUK HQ. I got the test report and basically it said there were 'Blue Screen, component failure, memory and graphics card issues'.

Now my reason for sending the machine back was because I was getting hardware errors on the CPU under load. I'm assuming the CPU was damaged due to the original high temps coupled with the fact the cooler had become loose in transit. I'm guessing this could also cause issues for the memory.

But it also states they found graphics card issues but I never had any graphical errors when using the system (though I know I only had the system for a short time). Can a damaged CPU really cause and issues with the graphics card?? I never once had a blue screen either though this may have appeared under their intensive testing i guess. It just sounds like my whole system was faulty when it was only returned for an overheating CPU???

It doesn't make sense to me, or am I just being paranoid!

These things happen. I blame the couriers. No, honestly, I've seen the way delivery drivers handle boxes and all fragile signs are meant to be ignored. If who ever delivered that hadn't knocked the box about, the cpu cooler would never had been misplaced your cpu would never have been fried. Damn postmans/couriers.

I also blame the couriers. I received my pre-built on Monday with the heatsink bent/out of shape. Most likely due to bad handling of the package. I've sent the heatsink off and should be getting a replacement soon. What a pain.. all because the delivery guy couldn't be bothered to do his job properly.

Totally agree with you both. It's really not on, I mean the couriers know they are handling delicate computer equipment but they still throw the packages around like they're sacks of potatoes! I wonder if OCUK has words with DPD as they must realise they're getting lots of returns due to dodgy handling?

Good luck with your system KalashnikovAli, hope all is well when you fit the new heatsink. Just hope you don't find any damage to the CPU like mine.
