Hi all

I'm trying to get more performance and added a new graphics card but still unable to get decent fps and gfx in GTA 5.

Rig is as follows

Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-HD2
GTX1050Ti 4GB GFX
16 GB RAM
AMD A8-7650K Radeon R7, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G 4.20Ghz

I've not long bought the graphics card and wondering if I can upgrade the CPU ( I dont mind spending upto £500 or there abouts) on a new processor to get better gaming performance.

Many thanks for any advice.

You will need a new motherboard, CPU and RAM really, as you have quite limited upgrade options on the FM2 socket of that motherboard, though for £500 that would be easily achievable.

Potentially you could source an older Intel chip and motherboard that are compatible with you existing DDR3 RAM and save a few quid...

You might end up being GPU limited once you get a new CPU though!! :p

I would say look at getting a Core i5 8400 or a Ryzen 5 1600 and if you don't have a reasonable PSU,a new PSU too.

What PSU and case do you have?? What drives too - do you have an SSD BTW??

Edit!!

The Core i5 8400 seems faster in GTA V but stock is very hard to get and OcUK seem to be selling the CPU at a silly price too.

buy used get an i7 4790k, and an 1150 motherboard. it will be a massive upgrade and you can reuse you ram

with your GPU no point buying maxed out cou set up.

Used 4790K and Z97 motherboard, keep RAM, buy a GTX 1070 when possible (1060 will be fine for now)

Won't cost an arm and a leg to do this.

If you want NEW parts (this will cost a lot more especially since RAM is a rip off ATM)

8600K
Z370-A (ASUS)
2X8GB DDR3 3200Mhz
(you will need an aftermarket CPU cooler as the CPU does not include in box)

If you want NEW parts and want to save a few bucks

AMD 1600
Strix B-350-F (ASUS)
2X8GB DDR3 3200Mhz (must be Samsung B die such as 8 pack Team group stuff on OCUK)
CPU cooler incl will be fine

GTA is one of those games that specifically performs better on Intel processors. Ryzen R5 1600 is a great all round processor but for that particular game you'd be a lot better off with an Intel i5 or i7

I'm not sure TBH. With my i7 Xeon GTA would get a choppy. With Ryzen it was smooth. Well smoother.

Recommended system spec according to google search states an i5 3470 @3.2ghz or an FX 8350 @ 4ghz so either buy an older FX system or an older i5 and your good to go.

Does say 660 2gb or 7870 2gb for graphics so your 1050ti should be capable

Your A8 is a quad, but it’s a low powered APU so not really designed for demanding games.

Thanks for the replies

I'm not going to be buying second hand, it needs to be new.

I take it if I were to move over to Intel processor I'd have to change Motherboard as it's an AMD mobo?

For any new cpu worth getting you'll need a new mobo and ddr4 memory.

Fortunately GTA V is well optimised, I had a great experience playing on a 2500K and GTX titan at 1440p. Obviously I didn't max the game out but it looked superb and was over 80fps at all times.

Yeah you'll need a motherboard and RAM. Be careful if you look at socket 1151 boards and chips as they are not all comparable.

I just upgraded to an 8400 it's a great processor for gta.

You will probably need to wait for stock though it was £170-180 on release and price is high on preordered.

Wouldn't bother with second hand when these 6 cores are so good and so cheap.

The motherboards start at around £100 and you would need new ddr4 ram which is fairly expensive, right now 16gb is about £150 but you might find some for cheaper.

£215 for a 8400 and £115 for a board last time I looked.

Coffee lake is way too expensive just now. You build a unlocked 1700X system for around that price.

Ok so if I'm upgrading the CPU, and I'll need a new mobo and RAM I might as well be buying a new system completely .

Only a few months ago I upgraded the PSU and GFX card though :\

Luckily you can re-use the psu and gpu but yes, you are looking at a whole new platform.
For GTAV you will be better off with intel.

Ok so what's the best I can get (in stock) for around £500. Mobo, CPU and RAM ? please :)

My money would go on this; overkill for your GPU I know but this should see you for at least x2 GPU upgrades without bottlenecking the GPU

These are OCuK prices, shopping around should get you below £500 but you do qualify for free delivery so you'll get it for £505

  • The i5-8400 is overall the fastest CPU of the 3 for 1080p gaming, but is £30 more expensive than it should be due to price-gouging. So you could wait for better prices.

  • Ryzen 5 1600 struggles compared to Intel specifically in GTA 5 at 1080p, but that bundle is a great price and overall the difference v i5-8400 isn't that great across more games, especially when the 1600 is overclocked.

  • If you can overclock the 8350k to 4.7ghz+ this would give it similar performance to the i5-8400 in GTA 5, and in some tests it even beats the 8400:

**5:25 for GTA 5 comparison**

I would wait for the 8400 to come back in stock and back down to the £170-£180 price.

It's hard to recommend any of the AMD because they are quite poor on gta.(would still be way better than what you have now though)

All the cheaper intel are only 4 core and more expensive ones are out of your price and total overkill.

If you did want to buy now and not wait for the 6 core 8400 to come back in stock there is this 4 core unlocked for £158 but needs a cooler to go with it.
