New PS3 firmware to remove Other OS feature

The only reason they allowed the Linux thing in the first place was so the ps3 could be classed as a computer and thus qualified for lower taxes in Europe or something. Clearly now the risk of the OtherOS exploits is greater than the cost of those taxes and the cost of any lawsuits. Besides, if no new consoles have this feature anyway, they've clearly already settled to take the hit on the taxes so that cost doesn't even exist any more.

doesn't really effect me, i bought my ps3 to play games, not to have a second PC :)

Same here. At times I like looking at upgrades etc for the PC but then there are times when I just want to play a game. Installing a bigger HDD is the only thing I did with the PS3 as it was pretty much bullet proof. It even tells you in the manual how to do it.

TBH if I still had my 60Gb this would be bad news. I use to use YDL on mine a lot! A lot of people comment on it being gimped etc. but that entirely depends on what you were using it for. I was mainly legal torrent sharing and emulating old skool games like Quake & Duke Nukem 3D (even the pads work) which was completely fine. If I wanted to play Crysis under a VM then I would probably run into issues. If this is actually true it will annoy a lot of users.

update is on april 1st.

I think it's legit, it's already been removed as standard from Slim models, why wouldn't they do the same across the board?

Poor April Fool's if not, a better one would be saying they were bringing out Cross-Game chat ;)

They tried this on with the PS2 as well, I'm unsure if they actually got away with it when they released the PS3 though as I think the regulations may have been tightened up, but I can't find any information to confirm either way.

thing is... they sold the original console as baing able to have linux... yellow dog, and now its been removed? are they refunding original PS3 purchasers?
AFAIK the original console & pre-slim never mentioned "Other OS" as a feature in the sales literature, it just happened to be a "oh hey that's cool" mention in the manual.

Could be wrong though.

Always a shame to see a feature go. Worst thing i think they're doing here is apparently when you update you lose access to files and folders in linux. Anyone that doesnt know of the upcoming change in the firmware will update and lose everything.

At the end of the day, they're removing a feature that was paid for on purchase of the console.
PS3 EULA said:
3. SERVICES AND UPDATES

From time to time, SCE may provide updates, upgrades or services to your PS3™ system to ensure it is functioning properly in accordance with SCE guidelines or provide you with new offerings. Some services may be provided automatically without notice when you are online, and others may be available to you through SCE's online network or authorized channels. Without limitation, services may include the provision of the latest update or download of new release that may include security patches, new technology or revised settings and features which may prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content, or use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with the PS3™ system. Additionally, you may not be able to view your own content if it includes or displays content that is protected by authentication technology. Some services may change your current settings, cause a loss of data or content, or cause some loss of functionality.
Seems like they're covered to me.

They'll have to have some sort of warning before install, so they can blame the user for not reading it.

I cba to find my original post in the geohot thread but I said at the time Sony would do this. Don't blame them tbh.
