And how exactly is Trading Standards going to do anything about a move that is perfectly legal and explicitly stipulated in the end user license - that when you purchase the console you fully and totally accept the possibility that features may get removed in the future?

So your effectively saying that Sony can do whatever they like to the software, whenever they feel like it? If Sony announced they were releasing a firmware update to the PS3 which prevented games on disc based media from being played due to 'security concerns', but if playing disc based games is a feature you used you can opt not to upgrade to the latest firmware but would loose the ability to sign in to Playstation Network and play new games - there would be absolutely nothing you could do, amirite?
Yes - this is an extreme of the situation - but fundamentally it's no different.

The good news is that this obviously means the exploit is worth serious plugging meaning that it might finally be time to invest in a pre update PS3 ready for some homebrew fun!

Not really. A games console is expected and intended to play games, therefore if they removed a core feature I'm sure they'd face consequences for it.
I get the impression that there are far, far more people making noise about this, than there are people who actually use Linux on their PS3.
It's inevitably going to get cracked one day, i just hope this sets it back for a while tbh.

There are tons of emulators for pretty much all the older skool consoles.

It's a depressing situation we're landed ourselves in really.
Long gone are the days were you purchased a console which feature set would remain consistent over its life and would allow you to play any game released for it, without having to agree to licenses and agreements just to keep playing. But no one seems to care, so I guess we'll just have to deal with it.

The ability to run most old school emulators on a ps3 using the pad without cracks, mods and homebrew is extremely meaningful and will be 1 feature i know will be missed

Licenses and agreements have been around since before the days of the Amiga
There's a fair degree of hyperbole at play here, and it's mildly irritating. One little-used feature gets removed from the PS3 - the first action of its kind - and you're lamenting the woeful state of the industry, which has in fact, gone leaps and bounds since the last generation.Honestly, some of you need to get it in perspective. The PS3 has more capabilities and features than its predecessors by light years. If you want to go back to the days of simply putting a game in and playing it without fuss - go ahead, nobody's stopping you.
This whole Linux malarkey is getting ridiculous and out of hand. I know for a fact you can hook up PS3 controllers to desktop Ubuntu and play on MAME games. Who on earth uses their PS3 as a Linux/Unix platform? It's highly impractical. All the 'advantages' the PS3 had, you could simply outmatch by dual-booting with Ubuntu or Linux Mint (they have all the requisite drivers and compatible software packages out of the box) and doing the same but with vastly improved performance and better memory management, even on aging PC hardware.
Have you not considered that people can't/don't want a PC in their lounge?
I didn't suggest they were new. But company's have never tried (or been in a position to enforce) changes like this which mean 3 years after you bought a product, you are forced to make a choice between either keeping your original feature set or being able to play new games.
Just because you don't use or care for the feature doesn't make it right for them to remove it in this manor.
