new Quest 2 competitor coming soon!!

I've read that FPS through steamVR seems to be "deliberately" poor when running steamVR through the oculus runtime. Could explain the issue you had with your q2. Testing on it, with same resolution, hz etc between q2 and index, had the q2 with something like 20-30% less frames. But playing same game through oculus store had the q2 almost matching (tiny bit lower due to compression I believe).

iRacing uses the oculus runtime I believe. It's certainly listed on the drop down box when going into the game. In fact it does, as when I first bought the quest2 I never installed SteamVR.

This is what OpenComposite was written for:

It basically converts SteamVR games to use the Oculus Runtime. Doesn't work with everything, but it can massively improve performance.

Nice to see someone has done soemthing about it. I have a load of steam VR games that I've never really played, but one day! One day! (It'll be never).

Some of the older VR games were great when they were released, but, now are very clunky and really show their age. Even though it has been only a few years since their release. I tried to go back and play a few of them that I had never played, all it did was put me off trying anymore!!

Damn, the FPS is something else. I struggled running iRacing at a constant 90fps with lots of cars on track. I'm not the only one, common thing in VR. I really had to start dropping settings, plus with the compression on the quest it started looking bad. Main thing for me with the quest though was the comfort if you remember. There is a youtube review video where they test fps between the two headsets and the pico is coming out at 20% less demanding....I can believe it!

Don't ask me how or why, but with the pico I can run everything on high (literally everything inc shadows and wing mirrors), set steamvr to 150% which makes things look incredible and on track I get a constant 90fps!! I just can't believe it. I've changed a couple of settings in the headset. Colour from standard to brilliant (I think that's what it's called), and knocked the brightness down 2 points.

I've just come off a 2hr session, never done that before!! also, there isn't a hint of ghosting which plagued me on the quest. Looked like ASW was constantly on, even though it wasn't....I just think that's what happens when your fps drops. This is without a doubt the best simracing experience I've had in VR. I was tailgating an R8 round silverstone and could clearly see the R8 badge on the back.

Comfort is fantastic too. I wasn't sure at first with the face cover being wide, but it's actually a good thing as it takes the pressure off your face. That together with the lighter weight, and better balance makes it really comfortable to wear. 2hrs later and I feel perfectly fine.

I'm really happy it. The only niggle is the dust and dead pixel but I don't want anything else now. I'm going to see if I can exchange it for another one.

If I was forced to pick any faults, it's that sometimes when you look at a bright white object you get a little reflection in the headset. Nowhere near as bad at the G2 though, but I can't remember seeing any in the quest. That said, I only noticed it on the pico home world, not in iRacing. It's so slight, and I'm being picky mentioning it.

oh, one last thing.....you only need to install steamVR, not the pico software as well. Damn, it's so quick and easy to get into an iracing session. Never had any bugs yet, just load up iracing and stick the headset on.

It does sound fantastic!! Glad you are happy with it.

I know you had other issues with the Quest 2, but, it does sound like something was wrong with your settings or something because the FPS difference shouldn't be that noticeable. A 3080Ti should be more than capable of getting 90FPS in high settings on the Quest 2. Would you be able to link to that video review where the Pico is 20% less demanding than the Quest 2. Because I can't believe it. Maybe if you are using an older AMD card with a slow encoder, but, not with a 3080Ti.

The other issue with ghosting is probably because ASW was probably on. It's stupid thing that Oculus did there. You can't turn it off. Sorry, lol, I mean you can turn it off in the Oculus debug tool, but, you have to turn it off again each time you play a game. People use Oculus Tray Tool to switch it off permanently.

And that's good about not having to install any software to play PCVR games using the cable. Reading about it before release I was under the impression that you had to install something on your PC for PCVR but, you wouldn't need to login to anything.

As tempted as I am by your review, I think I am going to give it a pass. There are a few really exciting headsets coming out over the next year that are hopefully going to be a generational leap over the Quest 2. Am saving up for one of those :)

So, now that you have found a VR headset that works for you. Do you think you will ever be able to go back to pancake racing?

@melmac

If there was something wrong, I honestly don't know what. Prior to changing headsets I would perform a format/fresh install of windows with all drivers and games. I'd also religiously ensure the debug tool was running to force ASW off. I could get an acceptable frame rate, but I definately had to drop settings and with compression it looked ok, but not fantastic. Maybe it wasn't ASW, but whenever a car would overtake me (fairly often lol), it would smear/judder. The reverb also did it, but that would look more like a traditional frame drop.

If you are happy with what you have now, definately wait for the next gens. I'll probably upgrade anyway, but it will have to have a dedicated DP port with good comfort.

as for VR vs traditional, I don't think it's one or the other. VR is just awesome, and I'll be using it whenever I can, but my monitor setup gives me human scale FOV so I think I'll use that for online racing, and VR for everything else. Yesterday morning I tried flight sim, and was again blown away. I must have been sat flying a cessna for 2 hours :D

all in all, I love the pico :D

I think this is the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNZGFVeccps

looks great and if I didn't already have a G2 and Q2 I would likely buy this instead.
As it is I may as well skip this and wait for a slightly bigger jump. but even so, what a great time to get onboard the VR train with at least 2 viable options for mobile VR and 3 viable options for affordable easy to use PCVR.

Competition is good!

I just wish there was a decent replacement for the Index which didn't cost the earth. I'm really noticing the lower resolution now, but even though I like my Quest 2, the FOV is too restrictive compared to the Index, and the compression is really noticeable in some games.

I really miss that FOV, amazing audio and uncompressed visuals when I use my Quest 2, and I really miss the wireless and the higher resolution when I use my Index.

i know what you mean
just have to hold out for the next generation, hopefully well get these 2 mixed into one headset :)

Just ordered one of these, useable out of the box was the main appeal. It'll be the 3rd level of redundancy at home, but mainly a handy thing to take to work and play pinball on during lunch break.

I hope i get the same 2 day turnaround as oracle.

If you know anyone with one already, get a referral code from them. If you don't, I'll happily send you mine. £23 in credit each.
