New quieter case

Akasa AK-825 Air-Cooled Copper Base Carnival Cooler is what I have on my 2400xp at the moment.

Not much to compare it with as it replaced a Silver Mountain 2Q with a delta bolted to it. :p

Haha, must be like sitting next to a Jet!

Its just an old wives tale that the case absorbs heat..

My v1000+ basically is very warm at the top during a gaming session, all the most of the heat from my 7800gt goes through the case making the top back quite warm to touch compared to say the front.

It does make a difference, and cases like the Zalmans and some other brands actually use heatpipes and the case as a heatsink.

The casing does dissipate heat, if the heat did not escape through the case, then the acoustic padding would not increase temperatures would it. ;)

Well, it is a claim made by all the aluminium case manufacturers as a selling point of their products over steel.
But still a marketing gimmic unless is actally has any significant heat producing element attached to it, such as the Zalman TNN series.

Improved airflow design is always more beneficial than case material for cooling, and was iirc the major benefit of ATCS designs, the fact that aluminium was also used aesthtically instead of steel would have negligible effect on temps.

It does make a difference, but if it is alu or not does not. :p

Any case will get rid of the heat with no airflow as long as the metal conducts heat. (Think I got the right word, really hated chemisty. :p)

My v1000+ is cold to touch everywhere but the top back of the case, which is warm to the touch.

I'd recommend the freezer 64 pro and an arctic cooler for your 9600!

As for the case - i have an antec p180 and apart from it being a little awkward to build in it's still a great case! Quiet, cool and looks good too!

I also have a tagan 2force 580watt psu and can't fault that either!

Oh the P180 is indeed a great case.

Just the thing is, there are greater cases about depending on what your after. :p

The Thermaltake Soprano is not that bad, but its a load of rubbish when put up against the Antec Super Lanboy and Lian Li PC7+.

Same with the Wavemaster, great case, but the Eclipse has it beaten into the ground for cooling, and looks can only take you so far if your doing high overclocking on air.

Watercooling the Wave is still good, but small compared to the Eclipse.

If the P180 did not have some of the competition out there then it would be top, just the cases get better all the time, and the P180 has been beaten in build quality by a lot of things even before it was made, its cooling is beaten and for some people its looks are beaten.

Although not beaten by everything in one case, individually it has been beaten in every area; so it has no niche for people wanting a specifically single attribute focused case.

Hi Dr.EM,

Have you made a decision on a case yet? Sounds like you're torn between the p150 and pc-7.

If you're set on matx cases i don't know how quiet the antec aria or minuet ii's (though the minuet only has a 220 watt supply) are but i'm sure someone here will. They might be a good bet for a matx board in a quiet case! Also, there's the overture ii with a 450 watt supply that seems fairly compact (13cm tall) for an atx complient case.

Hello again. Ok, my plan for the CPU cooler after realising its an old school socket A is to get the Akasa AK-827 cooler, which may not be the quietest, but then change the fan on it for an 80mm Akasa amber case fan, it seems it would fit? I know it may not achieve the 20db quoted because the airflow over the heatsink block is bound to be more turbulent than in free air, but it should be acceptable. Possible I could also lower the speed (the amber case fan, can it plug in where the CPU cooler fan usually does?)

The case, i'm probably going with the PC-7. It is reccomended frequently and should be nice to work with. I do prefer the appearance too over my other possible ones.

My overall list should now be:

Lian-li PC-7+
Akasa AK-827 CPU cooler
Akasa 80mm amber fan
Akasa 120mm amber fan (to replace one of the supplied case ones)
Akasa 400w PSU
Arctic Cooling Rev.2 ATI 1 GPU cooler (I have a 9600 card, but have no idea of the version/make as it was supplied as a replacement for my broken 9250)

I'm hoping thats all compatible otherwise :)

I agree with WJA96,

I recently bought a similar cooler for my girlfriends 3000+ Athlon XP. It was an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 3 (alias - Copper Lite)

It replaced an Aerocool Deep Impact (not a poor cooler but expensive at around £30 at time of purchase! ) and was instantly noticeably quieter as well as being far more able to cool the processor. Load temp of 65 degrees instead of 75!

Plus, it was bought for only £12 delivered! If you can find one of these or one like WJA96 mentions you'd be totally sorted!

Ok, I might go for one of those coolers then, thanks. So long as it says socket A, it is compatible with my 462 pin Sempron 2800?

Looking at GPU coolers again, i've managed to find out what exactly my card is. It appears to be a 9600 Pro made by Advantage. Looking on Zalmans site, thier cooler is not suitable with that particular make (a capacitor gets in the way of the clip). The Arctic cooling cooler says it is compatible with the 9600 Pro's, but does not mention makes or models. Is it likely to have the same issue?

Thanks, think I might need to remove the card to check for compatibility there, or take pot luck

I have got one of those copper silent 3 coolers you mentioned now, it looks good, thanks for the suggestion :)

P180 door and panel warping problems are now a thing of the past due to Antec upgrading the quality of the panels.

Wish that this would stop being brought up every time the P180 is mentioned.

Ok, thanks for all your help. I ended up going for the Lian-li PC7 case, Akasa 400W PSU, a quiet arctic cooling graphics cooler and the arctic cooling copper 3 CPU cooler (already installed). I will post pics over at the case gallery once it is done :)

They are no longer made no, but some are still in retail channels hence why I have had to point people with new cases in the last two months to the Antec support!

Yes it is easily fixed in a few days, but it is still an issue if there is a chance the case you buy has it.

Me and mr.orb set up the new quieter system today, the result can be seen here in the case gallery

The GPU cooler didn't fit at first as I almost expected, but after an hour or so of "modding" we made sure it did :D

And eventually, the system is a lot quieter. I am using stock case fans on full voltage at the moment, and intend to lower thier speed sometime. They are mounted with the rubber fan mounts too. The proof is in the pudding, and its now quiet enough to hear the beautiful sounds of the hard disk  :p
