Hi Guys,

I am considering buying a new raid controller after seeing some trully awfull speeds using an old highpoint rocketraid 1640 (samsung f1 320gb drives average hdtune read of 56mbps , getting in the 90's on the intel ichr10)

Really want an 8+ drive card, but trying to find an affordable one. Currently looking at the Dell Perc 5/i or Supermicro AOC-USAS-S8iR.

Dell is cheaper but and i've seen no reviews of the Supermicro, but have heard about compatibility problems with the dell and can't find out whether it would work in my board (gigabyte ex58-ud5).

Any advice on these choices or other suggestions welcomed.

Thanks.

I've got a Perc 5/i, can't fault it - especially at the second-hand prices.

Couldn't comment if it works on your mobo though.

Just don't buy an Areca 1680 series. I've been through 4 replacements.

I am running an Oracle database and already using all the intel ports and one of the jmicron ports and 2 of the highpoint rocketraid.

e.g.
2 mirrored in RR1640 for OS
2 mirrored in ICHR10 for data
2 mirrored in ICHR10 for backup
2 n/a in ICHR10 for redo
1 n/a in JMicron for swap/control file/VM Instances

Want to stop using the jmicron because it seems to be very buggy (e.g. bios only recognises two drives out of the four if in non-raid). So ideally I would move the drive in the JMicron and the 2 in the RR1640 to a new controller and potentially get another 4 or 5 drives to fill the new controller. (An extra couple of drives for redo, extra 1 to mirror VM Drive, and 2 more to stripe the data or create a separate array for indexes).

If you're willing to splash out a bit, then the Adaptec 5805 is meant to be a good card.

Trying to keep the costs affordable. The 5805 is twice the price of the dell perc 5/i (and you get a BBU so don't have to buy that separately).
