New roouter

A lot of internal staff run non-enterprise hardware and have been wanting it for as long as I remember, the reality is no one is going to sign off development work writing drivers for unsupported hardware.
which is annoying as a lot of dev work even in Corporate is on non Server grade hardware, but then it could be argued that in dev you dont need all the hardware bells and whistles. But i would disagree, as the hardware load is important.

Well, thank you all for the replies what most of you are recommending seems very advanced. and with experimenting with the various software running on those types of machines and having to then buy separate access points for wifi ? which then adds more money and more time needed to research and implement it all. i work long hours and a lot of hours so i doubt i would be able to find the time to sort all of that, hense why i was looking at a out of the box solution.. yes you are probably right it is the best solution. but atm not for me. i just need a good router. with strong wifi that doesn't drop constantly. and as i said originally must have dual 2.5gb ports. i know im limiting myself. but I have to work with what I can afford and what will work for my case.

If i had both the time and money i would get a Unifi Dream Machine se and 2 access points.

To be fair i have had Asus routers in the past and used the Merlin firmware on them and they were fine.
I just want to say thank you for the replies though. i dont get paid until the end of the month so still trying to do some research

So the advice given was to buy a Chinese generic Intel Celeron Appliance with multiple 2.5GbE ports and you can get those with WiFi and pre-installed with OpnSense for very little money. Because WiFi is WiFi is WiFi those units will likely perform as well as anything else that is a WiFi router.

Try typing Kingnovy N100 2.5G opnsense into AliExpress and you should find MANY suppliers for £100 - £200 depending on RAM and SSD. Enter into a chat with the supplier and tell them you want branded RAM and SSD and that you want Intel WiFi6E and they’ll put one together for you. They’re incredibly accommodating given how cheap these units are. They really are a great option for most people but they are a fraction more work at the outset.

Personally, I prefer Untangle to OpnSense and that’s the fabulous thing about these units. They’re just PCs and you can load any software you like. You won’t find better value from anything branded.

I'm nowhere near as learned as many of the posters on this forum, but for what it's worth I'm in a similar boat to you. If it's helpful, I have a pair of Asus ZenWifi XT12s which work well just plug and play, both have a pair of 2.5GbE ports and a few more Gigabit ports.

The base config for OPNSense is very very easy, its wizard driven for the most part and doesn't take any major depth of networking knowledge to get the basics working. Its when you want to start using the extra options and plugins that some research needs to be done.
