WPS is not the reset button.

as I told you, you're not doing it properly, so you can't expect it to reset properly.

I tried the 30 30 30 on the small button in the middle and now the power light is blinking slowly. but still not able to access the gateway

wait for a minute or 2. then connect cable into 1 of the LAN ports, type 192.168.1.1 into browser and hit Enter.

It sounds like it's in recovery mode. I assume that means you didn't complete the 30-30-30 reset steps correctly.

I found this:

For Asus units, the standard 30/30/30 method will reset the router but you will need to use the Restore button followed by a Power cycle. The only exception (so far) is the RT-N16 model, follow the same method as stated above but use the WPS button instead of the Restore button. If all else fails to reset you can also do it by command line (all units). Login to the router via telnet/ssh and issue the command "erase nvram". This will reset the nvram partition to defaults for this Make of router.....redhawk

head over to Asus site, get the ASUS RT-N66U B1 Utility version 4.2.7.6 and perform

Firmware Restoration

yes I tried that just before you posted, it seems that when I use the rescue utility from cd and latest firmware from asus, the whole process stops at around 90% saying the router is not in recovery mode anymore and has stopped blinking.

don't use the utility from CD, download the newest one.

you might want to do 30 30 30 before, to eliminate any chance of something not being right before you attempt to recover.

Kefan you've been the most helpful so thank you.
Something very strange happened, was downloading the latest utility then just 1 min ago the router goes to its config page.
The previous rescue might have worked??
Any way now I have to setup a vpn connection to 2 routers and pc/console.
I have been following a guide on the net.
telling me to get merlin firmware then dd wrt. Hope not to brick it again.

yes, it might as well be that the first rescue worked and it just took some time to get recognized.

if you get stuck again, do the the 30 30 30 properly and you should be cool.

hate to bother you guys again but after applying a dd-wrt firmare update again my router is bricked and this time it wont stay in recovery mode even with the 303030 reset.
Any ideas?

update: after leaving the router idle for an hour its back.
To anyonne that has the same problem : update firmware even if it says failed wait 1 hour connected and it should be back.

Anyone know how to flash this with the right ww-drt file??
