new router, problems with sky?

Hi all,
First let me say I hope this is the right place for this post , I just bought a new tp-link router (not exactly sure which one as I'm at work atm) so as I was setting it up last night I rang sky to get my settings and to my surprise I was told that they don't support third party routers and they refused to give me the setting's I wanted, so does anyone know how I can get the setting's without sky?
I must say I'm totally baffled by sky's response.

It also depends on which service, ADSL or Fibre and the model of router.

I had an SR102 on Fibre Pro and had to use a piece of software to analyse data coming from the router in order to find out my details so I could use a third party router/modem.
 
I've also seen them use different standards for the connection just to make life difficult for you - or possibly easier for them as I guess they just don't want to support third-party routers. Normally a connection uses PPPoA or PPPoE but if you're on an LLU connection they can run a different standard and stop accepting the others. I had success at first with running a third party router until they disabled the normal standards on the line.
 
I have wanted to change my router for ages but all the information out there just confuses me. Wouldn't mind one of the Asus routers. Think i would be tempted to use the Sky router as a modem and just connect to my choice of router.

I have had a quick look at the guide's at the sky user forum and find some of it seems a little confussing to be honest :o but I'll certainely give it my best shot.

Not entirely true, I have a Sky router on ADSL and have just switched everything off and port forwarded to my cable router. Pretty much acts the same as modem mode now and the router does all the security/dhcp :)
 
Well got my username and password from a certain piece of software but it still didn't work. Im using an SR102 on Fibre also and the new router is an N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router, I will try to follow the guides on sky user forum.
 
How do you have it all hooked up? Sky use a specific configuration, you can't use any old router sadly. It has to support VLAN ID and VCI.

If you're using the SR102 > N600 you don't need to have the N600 authentiacate afaik, you'll be letting the SR102 do all the sync stuff and simply using the N600 as xGBHxPegasus is using.

You only need your username/password, VLAN ID and VCI settings etc. if you;re using a VDSL modem.

I replaced my SR102 with a Billion 8800NL which is a modem/router combo which needed certain specific configuration to connect.

Basically you can't use the N600 to connect as you also need a modem, the SR102 won't function as a modem per se I don't think. Many people use the BT Openreach modem connected to a router which supports custom firmware like DDWRT etc. so they can change the config details to allow it to connect to Sky Fibre.

It took me a long time to read up and choose the Billion 8800NL as I can use it on multiple services (leaving Sky > Bt > whatever else in the future)

you know I dont think it is :( the only one I could find with a VDSL modem in it is the Asus N900 DSL-N66U Dualband Wireless VDSL/ADSL Router?
Would it work and would I see much increase i wireless speeds?
 
You need the correct PPPoE Authentication. SKy use MER to be awkward. Mer is not really used so you wont really find it as an option on a lot of routers thats why it fails to connect. A deliberate ploy by sky to use their kit.
You need a router that supports "option 61" setting I believe it's called. I Own the DSL-N66U but I left sky before I bought it as I too was fed up with there restrictions and poor performing SR102. I have not checked if it has this option available / probably can't check without messing around with my internet settings but it might be worth googling seeing if it does. Its part of the openWRT family so good chance it does but I know there are other routers that do support it, Billion perhaps. I left sky for plusnet as it was same price for 80/20 without the headaches.

If you want a router that plugs into the BT Openreach modem get the RT- models of the asus. They connect via the WAN port (no modem). If you want to plug your Router straight into VDSL then look for the "DSL" line up they include the RJ11 modem socket for ADSL2+ / VDSL2

check out Billion or Draytek. they both do good VDSL options.

thanks bremen1874 thats really helpful, and thanks to everyone for being so helpful:D

#Just a quick note, I got the Asus N900 and with the help of bremen's link I was able to get it up and running :) the only thing is I used old firmware (1.0.7.3)
as the newer f/w causes some faults.
