New scam

Offering to have the money checked/deposited before I post the item was interesting and not something I've come across before.

I got caught out with cash on delivery via gumtree. Lost a significant amount of money. Police involved but wasn't able to ID the person even though they did it to other people as well.

I chalked it down to experience and don't use gumtree. It's too easy to hide behind an anonymous profile and gumtree are no help whatsoever if it goes wrong.

When I asked for ID he went all the way to email a photo of a passport but was reluctant to provide a photo of a utility bill.

What happened?

Fake notes unfortunately, completely let my guard down. Quite obvious once you know what to look for.
how many of them were real?

Are the police not allowed to sell stuff on gumtree and arrest scammers?

can you perform a citizens arrest on a scammer?

I've always wondered about fake notes. How good are they?

Serious examination? Or flick through obvious?

serious? you never got them back?

why would you even report it if it happened again... guess thats what the police want though for the crime figures to look good

The real notes were a small amount of the overall larger total so just one of those things.

These were £50 notes used in productions/films etc. The serial numbers were all the same and if you felt them compared to a real note it was obvious they weren't real. I didn't check them thoroughly enough so completely my own fault. You just don't expect it to happen, especially on your doorstep with the house covered by CCTV.

It's made me be much more careful with handling cash so whilst it was an expensive lesson something positive came out of it. I won't be making the same mistake again!

I had a strange scam recently but couldnt work it out.

Advertised a free washing machine on facebook. 10+ accounts asking for my post code, none of them are local.

I'm confused, how is someone going to scam you out of a free washing machine? Could it be that these people are just willing to travel a bit to score something they can fix up and sell for profit?

Anyone not using cash/bank transfer on pickup/collection deserves to be scammed. No delivery, no courier, no showroom visits. You come, you pay and you leave. Anyone messaging involving delivery or couriers is just an insta ignore, no they cannot see it working either. I am selling from my home if I wanted to scam someone using my home address it would be for a lot more than a few hundred quid.
