New Scientist.

1) Do any of you here read this?
2) If not, and you read an alternative, what is it?
3) Are there any subscription discounts available? I've found a 40% off but have seen rumours of much better!

1) Yes
2) There are many alternatives, if there is a particular article you like, check the bibliography of that article to follow up the topic in one of the more focussed journals on the subject (e.g. the biochemistry journal)
3) Yes there are many discounts available, particularly if your a student. I get 40% off (the most I have seen so far) for working in a school and being part of the ASE (association for science education)

I used to read it very frequently because my college library had copies in regularly. I don't know if they're in my university's library, probably worth checking.

Also boobs.

I think new scientist is a bit of a chore to read. I can't say I'm interested in the majority of the articles....

National geographic is so much better.

I'm not a student :(

I know how to find academic journals, and have a subscription, but I just like the general information that this brings. Kind of like a newspaper but focussed on science!

I don't get this thread?
and
Cool story bro.

EDIT: I didn't see the for your time bit.

Worst 'New Sceintist.
Been reading this quite frequently recently. I think it's a good read but it's quite expensive! The aim of this thread is three fold:

1) Do any of you here read this?
2) If not, and you read an alternative, what is it?
3) Are there any subscription discounts available? I've found a 40% off but have seen rumours of much better!

Cheers for your help.

For your time:' Thread ever.

Is this your "thing" now? It's already irritating.

OP, do you know any students you could get the discount through? You'll get 50% off. Tons of students on here! Help the chap out, it's Christmas :D

Read it daily online thanks to my university having a subscription with them.

I have to say, New Scientist is great for a more in-depth view of all types of science compared to your normal sources. However if you want more details you're better off going straight to the papers that are referenced in the articles!

My job doesn't give me the time to read journals except for topics that are relevant to my field of work. This is why I like NS!

More rewards, you crazy Christmas pervs!

1) Not too often these days - expensive and very Layman's science
2) Alternative (which is a proper peer reviewed journal and much more expensive) is Science or Nature (which are two top journals in the world, covering articles which have a large impact in the scientific community).
3) As stated before, students/teachers get the biggest discount.

In science I am a lay-person! (Not strictly true, but not sure that I want to know the nuts and bolts of studies). How technical is Science?

Far too technical for a layman.

I can't imagine reading Nature or Science for fun.

This is what I thought. I have done enough reading of Lancet and so forth to know that technical journals are no fun! I just want a read which is scientifically accurate, yet not overly complicated. I guess NS is my best option. :)

If you have sufficient background then it depends on whether your aiming for a broad view of developments (a la NS) or a deeper understanding of the topics at hand (a la Nature or Science).

I will agree that they are both technical and complex (as I mentioned both are peer-reviewed journals) but if your of that mind then the information is there. I don't mind flicking through them for fun, and reading articles which take my fancy.

Edit: Not read it, but I believe that Scientific America is of the same vein as New Scientist - might be worth a try (have seen it at WH Smiths in the past).

I used to have a subscription but never had time to keep up with the weekly reading rate! Nowadays I pick it up whenever I'm in an airport (a lot these days) or Scientific American - whichever looks most interesting (which to me is generally physics and astronomy stuff).

I had to chuckle. For a moment I thought I'd strayed in to 4Chan by mistake. Anyway, I need the gif girl in my in my life. :o

As for the New Scientist. I went through a phase of reading it, but found the editorial slant a bit right on. If that makes any sense...

Though having been reminded of it, I'll probably start reading again in the new year though.
