Hi

Has anyone here got the new shape golf GTI. I had a test drive in the Automatic DSG paddle shift last week and was extremely impressed with the power delivery. The only thing is trying to get a discount from the dealers (More chances of winning the lottery :) )

Any one else test driven or considering buying one

the only thing it has got going for it is its strong second hand residuals..in all repsects and all reviews the new Octavia vRS seems to be mentioned as dynamically the same and 3 grand cheaper...and the new leon cupra will be along soon with a slightly higher powered engine and again will undercut the golfs price...same chassis, same engine, same gearbox, same switchgear,

We looked into the Golf GTI before we settled on the A3 Sportback 2.0T Quattro. The engine is brilliant, power is always there throughout the rev range. We settled on the A3 though due to it being a slightly bigger car than the golf, better interior, four wheel drive and my other half likes the Audi badge. Cost a fair bit more than the golf though but we did get 8% off retail. Just waiting till March 1st to pick it up now.

I have one, its the absolute daddy. If you speak to the right people you can also get a little discount on them too. Although I got mine 6 months ago, at the peak of its success and got £500 knocked off!

Get one, you won't regret it. Especially when you wipe the smile off all the BMW drivers - priceless!

EDIT - ok before all the M3/M5 boyz start jumping up and down, by all I mean all the run of the mill 316/318/323/330/520/530 boyz :D

Hi,

Do you have the manual or DSG, also did you get any optional extras ?

No, actually I was suggesting that the BMW drivers are surprised they are getting beats by a VW. Including those who have spent a lot of money on their 120i etc. Every BMW driver believes he drives the 'Ultimate driving machine.'

Anyway, back on topic. Options:

Manual
MKV GTI (2006) - 5 Door ~A1 Solid BLACK ~18" ~Xenons ~Leather ~Winter Pack ~Lux Pack 2 ~RCD500 ~Centre A/R ~Highline ~Parking Sensors ~Rear Airbags

Of which the essentials must be:
~18" ~Xenons ~Centre A/R ~Highline

I think you'd have a job on seeing off a 330i - Evo magazine tested one 0-60 in 5.9 seconds :)

unfortunately that is not the case, im well aware that my BMW only has 170bhp or so and is the weight of a tank, im well aware than any new hot hatch will have similar or more power as standard and be quite a lot lighter and more nimble.

:P

not worth spending extra on the diamond black metallic paint then ? , did you manage to get any discounts ?

I'd spend the extra on metallic paint, wouldn't want a £20k car with solid paint, will surely harm residuals?

LOL, a Ford man talks about residuals :D On a serious note, most people buying a black GTI will buy it in solid black because that is a pure black rather than diamond black which is pearl.

Well you see, my last golf has diamond black paint. If you can't be bothered to polish and wax your car go for diamond black, but if you want a true black shine there can be no other than solid black. It is the original and polished up looks plush even when compared to diamond black.

EDIT - £500 off list price. And yes 330i can be had by a GTI both in a straight line and around corners, especially with a little Abt tuning under the hood. :D

I have a cliosport 182 at the moment, in a few years time I was thinking of a Golf R32 MK2 but I will see what's available at the time. I do like the new Gti looks though.

Solid black paint does look awesome on the Mk5 Golfs in the flesh, I don't imagine it will affect resale either.

Just to prove a point:
