EDIT - £500 off list price. And yes 330i can be had by a GTI both in a straight line and around corners, especially with a little Abt tuning under the hood. :D

what about a fair comparison?
modded car v standard hmm..

:p

i do like the new shape golfs, not been in a gti, but had a 2.0l hire car for about 2 weeks, they are very comfortable and very capable motors :]

I love the way people get so worked up about 5 doors, it makes no difference, IMHO 5 door GTI's = great.

aall the benefits of the engine and handling and the added bonus of being practicle.

I have one, its the absolute daddy. If you speak to the right people you can also get a little discount on them too. Although I got mine 6 months ago, at the peak of its success and got £500 knocked off!

Get one, you won't regret it. Especially when you wipe the smile off all the BMW drivers - priceless!

EDIT - ok before all the M3/M5 boyz start jumping up and down, by all I mean all the run of the mill 316/318/323/330/520/530 boyz :D

Not sure about that. My E90 330d Sport books at 0-60 in 6.7 compared to the GTI at 6.9 and the 330d has a faster in gear time of 50-75 than a new
M3. Also has a higher top speed than the GTI, not that it would ever really come into play.

Your GTI is supposed to be a hot hatchback, the 330d is more of a cruiser, yet I'd bet the 330d would give you a run for your money. Whats more amusing...a GTI beating a 318 or a fat, ugly diesel beating you to 60? :p

There is a 245 kg weight difference between the two. You have 197 bhp, I have 231 bhp. You have 207 lb/ft of torque...here is the cruncher...I have 369 lb/ft. Fitted inside a rwd chassis that just won Car of the Year. With M Sport suspension.

The 330d is not "The Ultimate Driving Machine" by any means, btw. But
nor have I had a smile wiped from my face by a VW :D .

This sounds defensive, but why single out BMW drivers? And the Golf does look nice in black, very nice.

FTM - will the cupra come in auto tho?

as far as I am aware the DSG boxes are available across the whole VAG family, you can certainyl get them on Skodas so I would assume Seat get them as well

That is so true! even with the Mk4 its the same thing:

Well you see, my last golf has diamond black paint. If you can't be bothered to polish and wax your car go for diamond black, but if you want a true black shine there can be no other than solid black. It is the original and polished up looks plush even when compared to diamond black.

flat black for the win!

But back onto the subject....

The residuals will be good with the GTI, everyone knows it, its a great car to boot too so you could do much worse!

Test drive the A3 2.0T and the octavia vRS to help make up your mind.

The GTI has been out for a year now or so so you could wait slightly longer for a used one.

Myself I will be buying one, my Mk4 is fully paid off, but I am just lacking that last push to get one and I need to be earning over 32 k (almost there) work wise before I can affoard it. So I will be waiting a lil longer for mine and picking up used one.

But looking at the new vRS, will have to go and give that a spin in the meantime!

No difference to performance and probably more practical than a 2/3 door but a lot of people (including myself) just perfer the look of 2/3 doors.

This was one of the reason I went for an Alfa 156 for the last car as I needed 4 doors but it stil looked like 2.

I'm going to have this 3/5 door dilemma when I replace my A3 later in the year, assuming I get another one which, if I were changing it now, I would.

Slightly different kettle of fish with the A3 though as the 5-door is a totally different shape at the back. I think the 3-door looks slightly better but the new droopy nose suits the Sportback more I think.

I always think it comes down to how many passengers you have.

I have a 5 door at the moment, but I dont require one really.. Its just me and the lady usually.
