New socket to replace LGA1366 due in 2011

Well core i7 @ 4Ghz is more then enough for a good 2 years yet before it's limiting GPUs to much so i don't see how this is so important unless you want the max possible from a GPU i'd rather wait a gen of cpu and loose 10% performance then waste £600 on new cpu mb ram which again will get replaced.

it may be new Socket R (LGA 2011) see this table list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_socket#AMD

Yes the 1366 didnae took very long since it was released Intel seem to change new one for the future and dump the 1366 for the new 2011 -- dont know about the 1156 so maybe keep it for wee while before replace new one -- AMD still development new Fusion for the begin of 2011 with new 32nm included 8 core and maybe AMD develop new processor with extra pins but it too early to say at the moment.

Just order my 920 for £165, im bulding a gaming machine so there will be no need to upgrade to the next socket after this one comming

If the rumours are correct its going to be quad channel, and some say that integrated graphics will be there too.

Any single one of these requires a socket change i believe.

who got sucked in to buying a i7 980x

edit found site. http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/04/21/intel-sandy-bridge-details-of-the-next-gen/1

Just read on the net some intresting news, those of u who have just gone and brought i7 980x and shiny new LGA1366 boards to show it off have might have just wasted a whole heap of money lol

As Intel are bringing out LGA2011 some time in the 3rd quarter of 2011 which will have the 68 chipset

more pins to me has always meant new functions these new boards are suppose to support quad channel DDR3(more memory to buy great)

And the new processors that support this new LGA wil be 4, 6 and some talk of even a 8 core

I know we all have a need for speed but some times i think maybe we just need to stop and wait a year or so to see how things pan out instead of jumping on to new tech wagon (its shiney and new but still pulled by a donkey)

has any one else got any information on this new LGA2011 or the chipset that might be supporting it

not exactly the same topic :D

anyway anyone who has that much money to buy the 980x..probably won't be that bothered overall :p

That's over a year away anyway, who out of the people buying a chip like has the long run toping there list of priorities? They wanted the best there is at the moment and bought it. Someone who waits till Q3 2011 and pays top $ for the extreme edition then is arguably wasting there money as 18 months (hell probably quicker than that) that new socket/chip will be superseeded by something else.

Not really.

I mean, personally I don't imminently need a 6 core, 12 threaded monster CPU for my computing needs - but some people do and have the funds to pay for it. For these people waiting 18 months for a new tech CPU to come out isn't an option, they want something super quick right now. For these people, the 980X is great - and can rival super expensive dual Xeon systems for performance with a much lower price.

For information of the new Intel generation, this page is pretty interesting.

Not really sure what the OP is getting at here .... yes buying one of those i7's costs a lot of money but it's not as if it's going to stop working the minute something else comes out. Some people, with lots of money (not me ... I'm still running a C2D), may want a fast machine now and hence a bought one.

Besides you say it will be released in Q3 2011 .... say it will be released late September then, that's 16 months away .... absolutely ages in computing terms ...

And even then whos saying the road map will pan out, might end up being even longer than that, not an uncommon event.

but then you could say the same every time you go to buy some hardware it'll never stop getting better!
