On the topic of signage/ speed limits aren't there cities around Scandinavia with zero signs/ traffic lights, etc. Accidents rates are almost non-existent?
People there are also not complete idiots.
For all this whining about the Nanny State, a quick look around suggests that a good percentage of the population here wouldn't survive without it...

I find that having so much signage means people go on auto pilot and don't use common sense.
Or just don't read any of the signs, because there are too many of them...

should have increased the points instead like the mobile phone penalty. just highlights a clear money making scheme now rather than reforming speeders or taking the license.

The offences in question already carry a large number of points or a ban...

I see thay now cheers.

So will the speed awareness course continue to replace the 3 points or is that going? Is there also no leeway at all on recorded speed. I will be a bit annoyed if i get recorded doing 31mph in a 30 zone then fined / points applied.

Has anyone EVER been done 1mph over the limit. With proof.

Not sure why everyone is getting so het up about this. If your within normal limits it'll be dealt with via a FPN if your going fast enough to be summonds then the fine was upto 100% now its upto 150% of your weekly wage.. Will that 50% extra now make you slow down. Doubt it

Vox good luck in court mate. You may wish to seek the advice of someone like Andrew Thompson (Barrister - 'AGTLaw' on PistonHeads) or Bobby Bell (solicitor and Crown court advocate). Both are very highly regarded in cases like yours, offer fairly low fixed fees and can be surprisingly effective in avoiding or mitigating the consequences.=

Andrew is good at making sense of this stuff. He is a Barrister who specialises in this area so tends to be a useful contact to have.

Delayed response as I've been out for a few days, but thanks both, Andrew Thompson was who I had planned to use due to his reputation.

Andrew has helped a number of people I know and is currently helping a colleague of my wife.

He is very good and very helpful.

I never realised that from 2008 1mph over a speed limit could get you 3 points.

Until this kicked off i always thought it was 10% +2mph.
I have a 20yr old Focus so the Speedo isn't going to be capable of getting within 1mph without GPS speed or driving under the limit.

How do they calculate the fine if you don't earn money at all, such as somebody who lives of a rich wife/husband who doesn't have a job or receive benefits. e.g. wife of some overpaid footballer gets busted going 50 in a 30 on the way to buy some new shoes or something, and gets fined 100% of her weekly income, which is £0, surely they don't get away with just the points and no fine?

Also it should work the other way around, why should there be a cap on the fine, if you are going to make it a % based punishment, make sure it punishes the super rich just as hard.

It's 'income' not earnings so I'd imagine there's a way to get the money. I'll be a jobless student but i expect I'll get a fine based on the student loan income?
Unless it's household income i.e. rich footballer page?

It was mentioned earlier in the thread, since the introduction of increasing speed enforcement accident rates have actually increased in the UK

http://www.safespeed.org.uk/againstcameras.html

With more modern data we can say that's not actually true though.

Overall injuries have also gone down by around 30% since 2003 as well. Obviously it's a lot more complex than "less injuries, less accidents" (car safety for example would be factor, as well as treatment for those that may have died of their injuries in the past) but to take the slope and extrapolate, and then back it up with one year of a small increase is poor science.

I find that having so much signage means people go on auto pilot and don't use common sense. Some country lanes have the national speed limit signs everywhere, so people drive at 60 and take do not take into account the hairpin that is fast approaching... BUT BUT THE SIGN SAID 60!!11!!!!

Also I find that at a local high street, which has a mainline station, it is notoriously busy during rush hour, understandably, and has a cross junction that creates huge tailbacks. When these traffic lights are not working I find the traffic management a lot better and it cuts journey time considerably.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/03/plan-remove-white-lines-roads-divides-opinion-norfolk

Road safety experts are deeply divided over the trial removal of white lines from the centre of highways, which research has shown may cause drivers to slow down.

Removing the lines has been shown to make motorists drive more cautiously, reducing their speeds and hugging closer to the kerb for fear of going over the “imaginary” central line.

Quite possibly, may be similar to to the plans to remove white lines. It slows people down and makes them drive more cautiously.

Whether it would all work as well in the UK i'm not so sure. The UK has some of the most aggressive drivers on the planet IME so probably not a great plan without sorting that attitude first.

Most of them are aggressive due to the ridiculous over-management of simply driving from a to b.

I haven't seen a scamera van for ages, this news hits the headlines and they are like a plague all of a sudden

I don't mind it tbh but i don't like that they are in money making places rather than real roads.
I also don't get why they are so publicised because if you aren't breaking the law then don't worry. If you are you deserve it because observation isn't great and a car driven by somebody who isn't paying attention is like having a loaded gun.
It's all a choice.

Hmmm... yes I know that you shouldn't be speeding but the cynic in me wonders why their favourite location round here is where the limit drops from 60 to 30 while going down hill.

Could be worse. Saw this a couple of days ago: yes, it is a speed camera albeit a very well hidden one. Sometimes they park between parked cars which makes them even harder to spot. Luckily I was just cruising along at 30 admiring the view but whenever I see stuff like this it makes me very glad I don't have French plates.

Seriously? That's a speed camera being operated in the back of a Dacia Sandero?

Corrr, and we moan in this country when big yellow white and blue vans, with blacked out windows "weren't visible enough". :p
