New sport/hobby required

Bouldering/climbing.

Indoor gyms are closed at the moment obviously, but when they open.

It's as social as you want it to be, you can just go on your own, go in a group, meet a group there.

Amazing all over workout, you get buff just from doing, no boring as hell pushing weights around. Great back/core exercise, totally fixed my back problems.

Good mental challenge, figuring out routes and techniques.

If you get into it then lots of possibility to get outdoors, get into sport/trad climbing.

Was going to suggest this, but with a dodgy hip it might not be ideal! It is a good social activity though. :)

e bike i am also thinking ,with the hip Vanmoof who are essentially doing the iphone of e bikes (a phrase that put me off tbh but they slashed 1k off old model) the reason i mention them is a one size suits all frame suitable for height 155cm upwatds ,maybe set it lower and dismount on the good hip

It's definitely worth trying. Does wonders for your mobility and strengthens joint musculature. I've got osteoarthritis in both my big toes and it doesn't really hold me back, if there's a particular route that needs you to channel all your weight through one toe, then I just skip it and move on to a different one, no biggy.

Can always just be a campus thug and pull your way up everything with your arms, not going to win any technique awards, but you'll get ripped :D

Pros: definite increase in all round fitness, meet new people, learn new skills
Cons: If you already lift weights to a good standard it's likely your max numbers will reduce. Constant myths about injuries :D

Are you still doing a lot of climbing?

I've just started going with my daughter (12) to a local club.

But I can attest to the work out thing, and poor technique! In my first introduction session I used my arms and upper body to pull myself up most of the way. After half an hour I was shattered and my forearms and hands were gone.

Not a bad suggestion, although generally an all day sunday thing you can just turn up for a few hours or some sites do evening games.

Its as physical as you want it to be, you can sprint around all day or park yourself in a hedge and have a nap.

Only problem is the bit where it'll suck up every last penny you have spare....
Can confirm. You’ll go from a cheap as chips AEG, two spare hicap magazines and a scabby set of camo fatigues from your local flea market to more guns than your local TA unit and more gear than a Navy SEAL team.

What about buying a step through style bike/dropped top tube? That would mean you can get on/off without as much issue?

Yep, loads of climbing, mostly outdoors while the weather's good. Got my other half into it finally earlier in the year, and yesterday we nipped down to Snowdonia and did our first big multi-pitch route up the East face of Tryfan. Bloody ace, but shattered today, lugging a full rack, ropes, food, shoes and extra layers up a mountain and back down is a hell of a workout, 8 hours on the go!

Anyone into crossfit?
Pros / cons?

I'm into fitness / strength and conditioning. I go to the gym. Doesn't matter what it's called. If you get on with it go for it. As long as you enjoy it and you get fitter/stronger then it's all good.

Problem with the gym industry is that it's pretty toxic, regardless of what you decide to do. Strongman, bodybuilding, fitness, crossfit, powerlifting etc... Rather than a more agreeable understanding that we're all chasing personal improvement.

Give the CrossFit culture a go, if you like it and it motivates you then that's all you need. As long as you learn how to do the exercises properly and don't fall into the trap of doing certain things just because the "rules" of CrossFit tell you so then it's all good.

That's the only issue with CrossFit is that if you don't do it the CrossFit way it can be a little elitist. Imagine if you just wanted to kick a ball around with some mates, it's not technically called football, but you might just call it that because why not? Does it matter that you're not playing on a pitch with all the players and rules and so on? No. You're just having a kick about and enjoying it and getting fit and having fun.

Same principle. Find a gym routine work out style you enjoy and stick to it but learn and be open minded.
