How do I know what storage solution to buy to replace the older HDD I have in my laptop? It also has an M2 SSD as standard.

It is a Gigabyte P57W with the older 970M 3Gb (not 1060).

What is the difference between M2 and the SATA 6Gbps SSD’s and why do I have an M2 SSD and a 7200rpm HDD...assume the older tech is cheaper for large capacities?? Could I, for example, have 2 x M2 drives instead of 1 x M2 and a HDD or a SATA SSD?

Sorry. I know zilch about PC storage.

From a quick Google it looks like it only has 1 M2 slot so your replacement for the hdd would have to be a sata ssd.
An M2 is quicker but a sata ssd will be fast enough for anyone's needs imo

The M2 drive looks like it’s a PCI-E SSD which is the fastest type. They’ve put in a mechanical HDD for cheap bulk storage. It’s not a bad setup as you have your OS and apps mostly on the very fast SSD and can stick all your media on the slow HDD as you don’t need fast access to them.

If you do want to upgrade you’d be fine swapping the mechanical HDD to a SATA 3 SSD - in the real world there’s not a lot of difference in experience between SATA and PCI-E drives, but SATA is a lot cheaper.

Make sure you get the latest firmware for it, the 840 Evo had a terrible performance bug which was fixed in newer firmware. Install Samsung Magician and it should take care of it for you :)
