New Studio 17 :-)

yes it was that model. my dell status is now in production so i will wait a bit to see if here in time.

that model was pc pros a lister to.

Well on paper the 8935g sounded awesome!

But...
The screen had really poor contrast and colour stauration
It did not get very bright and had such a reflective coating I had to use it in a dark environment.
The graphics could switch between the ati 4670 and intel 4500 which seemed like a good idea except you could only use acer drivers and acer are IMHO the worst laptop manufacturor for updating drivers!

I paid £1000 and sold it on for 750 2 months later as it was so poor.

Now just wish Dell would pull their finger out and get the Blue lids in so I can get my 1745 this side of xmas!

yes i hope mine gets done very quickly to.

interesting, as looked at the machine in comet and it looked lovely.

Has anyone got there dell studio 1745/47 yet? Mine is still saying 22nd :( 6 damn weeks!!!

Really would like to hear peoples opinions on this laptop as I am so tempted to cancel mine and get something else

Recieved my new Dell Studio 17" on the 9th November last month. T6600 2.2ghz, ATI 4570, 4GB DDR3.

Seems like a excellent laptop apart from the motherboard breaking within a week. Dell support were great, sent out a engineer the next day and had it fixed. They said this was a one off because it was new and if it broke again i'll have to post it to them.

It doesn't produce much heat. I can be gaming for 2 hours and it will still be very cool. Unlike my old laptop which burnt my legs when internet browsing.
It is great for playing games, running mass effect, Mirrors edge and Modern Warfare 2 fine without any problems.

Sound quality is fantastic, much better than what I was expecting. There is a sub woofer underneath the laptop which improves the sound massively. Not as good as a pair of headphones of a decent set of speakers but compared to other laptops i've used their great.

The only downside is the fan is quite noisy when gaming but this was to be expected.

Running all games with 1600x900.

Sam and Max Season 1 & 2 - Highest Quality
Mass Effect
Modern Warfare 2
Mirrors Edge - Highest quality, think I turned the AA down a bit
Tales of Monkey Island - Highest Quality

Haven't got the laptop on me so can't remember what settings I had on ME and MW2.

Thanks,

I'm tempted to get one as a desktop replacement and would want to run the likes of Rfactor and GTR Evo, so if it can deal with Mirrors Edge it should do ok with those.

Steve

got my dell at ;ast. very nice, keyboard a bit spoungey and flimsy feeling but lovely overall. sound is good via the jbl system.

now, do i format and re-install my programmes and windows or do i need to keep the dell stuff on it?

what spec did you get? full hd screen?

will get pics up.

no full hd screen but the screen is lovely. my spec was i7 720, 500 gig hdd, 17.3" screen, jbl premium sound, 4650 1gig graphics, 4 gig of ddr3 1333mhz ram, 2 mg camera, nice case, full keyboard which i wasn't expecting as full numeric at the front corners. good bass.

so the base i7 spec, thats exactly what i ordered.

but i gotta wait for mine, damn all this waiting is killing me lol :D

Yeah, thats the first thing I do with any dell laptop! It should come with a W7 disc.

Pics would be great.

Could you also please comment on heat? Especially touchpad and palm rest?

Finally the sxps i7 guys seem to have a lot of problem with it downclocking whilst gaming so you might want to check that (as the specs are very similar to the 1747)

will format it tonight. pics won't be coming anytime soon. lost cables.

heat is good, doesn't get to hot, touchpad is ok, sometimes a little to sensitive others not at all. look forward to using a mouse to be honest.

have not tried with gaming yet, decorating at moment, but will try it soon. let you know.

so far, so good. lass said its a bit slow on internet but i think its connection issues - wireless - as my old one used to pause to.

Just had mine delivered, at 5:15 (too close for comfort :P).

Looks:
First off the thing looks really nice. The black chainlink on the lid is barely noticeable and the silver on the main body is only noticeable when looking directly at it (i.e. its not glaring at you out of the corner of your eye). I had a scuff mark on the left of mine below a port but wasnt anything worth kicking up a fuss about. The keyboard and the touch buttons are very swish looking with their jet black colouring and bright vibrant white lighting.

Comfort:
I thought it would be a little thing to say but may be very important to some nonetheless. The 9 cell battery results in a little "bar" at the bottom back of the laptop. Its great for elevating the laptop a little when on a desk but its a bit uncomfortable when on your lap. I can imagine most people would want the 9 cell battery, especially for the i7 versions, but it would have been nice to atleast choose and option to have the 6 cell to avoid the lap problem.
The keyboard is very nice but the arrow keys are slightly squashed and will take a little getting used to for some, especially those used to full desktop keyboards, but again its only a small thing.

Screen:
Having an IPS screen for my main desktop rig i can clearly tell the screen isn't amazing but it is still quite a nice one and has no stand out colour problems etc. Good levels of brightness aswell.

Sound:
The sound is a lot better than i was expecting, i think its mainly that tiny little "sub" which has made the sound a lot nicer. Again for audiophiles it is probably nothing amazing but for most people it will be a nice pleasant set of speakers, particularly in comparison to most laptops.

Performance:
I have yet to put it through its paces in gaming, or anything serious but i have been doing plently of installations and running lots of programs as im used to doing on my desktop. Most laptops will work up a little sweat and slow a bit when doing lots of stuff but this one (i7 version) did very well and felt as if it could be pushed so much further.

Ambient Noise:
The cd drive makes a little noise but nothing different in comparison to most other laptops, so pretty average in those standings. As i said i havent done much stressful yet but the fans havent made too much noise, especially when music is on even at a relatively low volume.

Heat:
At best it has got warm. Nothing hot really, generally its actually quite nice having a little warmth emiting from it keeping your digits warm :D

I'll probably get some pics up soon (unfortunately only from an iPhone so not amazing quality)

Overall very pleased.
