A brand new 2D Super Mario Bros. title for the Wii!

Developers at Nintendo have dreamed of creating a simultaneous multiplayer Super Mario Bros. game for decades. The Wii console finally makes that dream come true for everyone this holiday season.

Now players can navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time on the same level at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun.

* The sequel to New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS.
* It is played in classic style, with the Wii Remote held horizontally.
* Simultaneous multiplayer capability of up to four players.
* 8 - 10 hours of gameplay.

* The game will not feature online multiplayer.
* The game will also be the first game on the Wii to feature "demo play", where players will be able to pause the game, let the game complete the level for them, and resume play at any time by unpausing.

Hands On Impressions:

The result is New Super Mario Bros Wii, and it's fantastic fun.

After romping through a few levels with three others at Nintendo's plush and airy E3 booth, I was left grinning from ear to ear. The game doesn't look like much - well, it looks like a New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, exactly like it in fact. But you need to play it for mere minutes to tell that it's got the perfect balance of order and chaos Nintendo's platformers are famous for, mixed with the sugar-coated mean-streak of Mario Kart and the mischievous invention, sharp tuning and secret surprises of the developer's best.
Video in higher quality on EGTV

Players start out as Mario, Luigi and a couple of coloured Toads - who knows if more characters might be available later? - and start the time-honoured scroll from left to right. The Wii remote is held laterally and the game uses NES-style controls - d-pad, 1 to dash, 2 to jump. That's it, save a shake that performs a spin-jump or, if you run into another player with dash also held down, picks them up. But as ever with Mario, a simple control scheme doesn't mean a simple move-set. We discovered the wall-kick and ground-pound, and we're sure there are more.

As with Four Swords, physical interaction between the players is at the core of the game - chucking each other around, bouncing off each other's heads, getting Yoshi to gobble up your friends and spit them out. Yes, Yoshi's in it, along with his multicoloured dinosaur tribe, flutter jumps and fixation with eating everything in sight. Opportunities to mount Yoshi are carefully seeded through the level we play, and always an object of scrambling competition between players.

It's bopping other players' heads that makes the real difference in to New Super Mario Bros Wii, though. You friends essentially become a set of wildly unpredictable moving platforms that can be used to grab coins or items - often found floating in bubbles, or produced in fours from blocks - first, or with a bit of co-ordination, to access secret or hard-to-reach objectives. Although it's unlikely to be an essential part of gameplay - New Super Mario Bros Wii will need to be playable solo, even if it's hardly the point - it's a simple stroke of genius that defines the game: it has huge potential for both co-operation and competition, and more importantly, it's really funny.

Really looking forward to this. Loved the DS version. I've been playing my Wii more often now and starting to enjoy its simplicity. Its good to take a break from super ultra violent games and just play some Nintendo. :)

I just hope this is a good full on mario adventure like the DS one and not just a MP mario game for the sake of it.

ut i'd rather a proper, flagship 2d Mario adventure rather than throwaway Mario party fun.

Mario Galaxy 2 isn't far off. NSMB Wii is said to be a full on mario game, not just something they did for MP.

As long as the levels are challenging enough in SP and nothing in the game looks like its made just for MP, I'll be happy. I'll probably play through the game with my sister as she was hooked on the DS version.

The gameplay looks amazing.

As for demo play... It's not for those of us who will slave away at something for day on end. It's for those of us who want to get on and play the game and not miss out on hours and hours of gameplay because they can't manage a particularly difficult 2 minutes on a boss fight or a handful of really hard jumps or whatever.

Then why are those people even playing videos games if they don't want to play through the hard parts?

Its a dumb feature no matter how you look at it.

"The game will also be the first game on the Wii to feature "demo play""

First game? I take it Nintendo are playing to put "demo play" into future titles. I hope its not in MG 2.

What makes me laugh about this is that Nintendo were all about fitness and getting off your ass and jumping up and down, wii fitness etc, now they’ve done a game that….

…..wait for it. Yes..!! it plays itself. Awesome. Nintendo, make your mind up. Are we to be lazy and not do anything, or get up and do something..!!??

lol

Good point. lol. :D

Even casual gamers that I know don't mind a challenge. They aren't going to play through games lik megaman 9 or ninja gaiden, but if its Mario, they'll have fun with the challenge.

Unless this feature is for the people that call the Wii "that game that plays the bowling." or the people that bring in their monitors to a repair shop when their GPU dies. :/

You have to remember that this is feature is not for us sat here discussing it. It's for my wife or your mum or whoever else.

I think this feature is only for those that suck so hard at games that they stop the progress of the group of players. If one player can't do something while the others can, that player can just pause it so the rest can continue. I guess its a smart feature in that regards.

I just don't see the point in using this if you're playing it on your own.
