Hi looking for some advice on a system i just built from scratch.

i5 3570k
8gb corsair vengeance
500gb samsung HDD
Asus p877-v motherboard
gigabyte 670 2gb

ive built it and installed the OS (windows 7 64 bit home premium) but it just doesnt feel right, for example it can be a bit "slow" loading programmes, almost as if their sticking when opening, another way to describe it is as if the FPS is dropping.

When im typing it lags by a fraction of a second typing in the keys etc.

When i scroll on a web page, it sticks slightly again.

Ive updated all graphics drivers.

Any advice? Sorry its a bit vivid, but best way i could describe it.

Hello there. Sorry you're experiencing this, takes the shine away in a new build. Hopefully we can solve this though.

First up, have you installed all the drivers that came with your mobo? Any yellow icons in the device manager?
Second: Have you done anything in the bios? Is the bios update?
Third: Check the hard drive performance with atto and verify it is about right for the drive.
Forth: run memtest (do this anyway), are the sticks in the right slots?

Keep us posted.

Perhaps if none of the above works, pop out the gfx and use igpu and see if that does anything. Doubt it though.

load as ssd benchmark and post a screenshot, don't run the test just show what it displays

maybe do a secure erase with Samsung magician and re install windows

Hi thanks for the tips, I will try this tomorrow as im currently at work.

One thing I will say though is you can hear the system accessing the hard drive, is there anyway to test the drive for it being faulty in anyway.

Im currently playing rome two without any problems. However on desktop you can see something just isn't quite right. Its not entirely noticeable, but me being scrutinising on 800 quid of parts can notice it.

What antivirus do you have installed?
The lag you're describing along with the constant hdd activity noise sounds like either a virus scan/rootkit check going on. I know some av programs on their default settings can really slow down a system.
I'd go through the steps the previous posts have suggested. But it may be worth a look through your av settings later on.

run some benchmarks, cinebench for example to compare cpu score

nothing in taskmanager is hogging cpu/memory

Carried out HDD tests, passed all tests so far.

Regards to anti-virus. AVG.

I didnt know you could put memory in the wrong slots? #

It seriously beginning to annoy me, as i cant figure out what is causing this.

My computer index score is 5.9, this is due to the hard drives data transfer rate? Could this be the cause of the problem?

yes if your using an ssd

and other hdd's attached? did you set in the bios your ssd as first boot device so that you boot from that and not old hdd?

ssd should score 7.9!!!

load as ssd and see if it shows green or red writing

(edit) 5.9 is normal for any mechanical hdd,i thought you also had an ssd

I notice you put:

500gb samsung HDD

So, I'm just double checking here, it's NOT an SSD? But a normal HDD?
Have you tried swapping out the SATA cable for another? Try using a SATA3 cable.

No SSD im afraid. In hindsight i should have just bought one. But never the less, this build which is still less than a week old shouldnt be giving me any problems, unless something is faulty?

Is something plugged in somewhere wrongly, is something not performing at its optimal ability.

Im just going to go run cinebench and see what that says.

One yellow icon in device manager for universal serial bus controller. Wouldnt explain the "lagging" when scrolling on a web page though?

here are my specs in closer details.

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64
550W PSU, XFX Core Edition P1-550S-
Intel Core i5 3570K,1155, Ivy Bridge
2GB Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce 3X,
Asus P8Z77-V LX2, Intel Z77, S 1155
500gb Seagate sata 3 (thought it was a samsung i purchased)
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz CL9 1.5V Non-ECC Unbuffered

I take it this is a new install of avg 2013 on your pc. Did you also run the pc tuneup?Try disabling avg and running some programs. And see if there is any noticable difference.

What was your harddrive model, and post your ATTO score.

The only other thing I can suggest is a complete reformat and reintall, and only install minimal OS stuff. Then see how it feels.

Lagging whilst scrolling a webpage sounds like graphics card/driver issue to me. I've had many fresh installs respond like that whilst I'm browsing to the Nvidia webpage to get the drivers.

Have you removed the 670 and just tested it with the integrated graphics (and drivers obviously) as Inoton suggested?
