Hi Guys, what a popular forum this is, can I ask you for some advice?
I’m looking to replace/upgrade my old system, firstly not a gaming machine just a regular pc, reasonably quick and powerful,

My current system is an Asus pn5-e sli, Mobo with an Intel Q6600, 2.4 quad, with fan stuck on top of cpu, 4GB ram OCZ Gold( 2x2GB) Win 7 all contained in a large Antec case, 2x1Tb, HDD+ DVD Drive & graphic card, Radeon HD 5450, the system must be 5-6 years old

What I’d like is an i5,(4570) or similar, SSD 240 GB , New Mobo with 8 GB Ram, On board audio 5.1 + , on board graphic output DVI & RGB a must as I use two monitors (1920x1080 ) Usb 2&3, new PSU and Fan, all to run on Win 8.1

Appreciate any suggestions / recommendations or questions,
Thank you in advance, regards, john

Ouch that font..

I reckon you have the right idea with adding more RAM & an SSD. Also if you haven't already then grab an aftermarket cooler and overclock your CPU.

Hi John,

Will you be building yourself, inside the Antec?

The storage drives and the DVD drive, are they IDE or SATA?

When you say "new PSU and fan", which fan do you mean?

Hi Danny75,
I will build my own, I have some experience in doing this, the HDD and DVD are Sata, I only have one fan above the CPU, and the other is built in the PSU, so I'd replace them as they've done serious some mileage by now, but still working fine

Thanks. So you mean the CPU heatsink/fan? The stock Intel cooler that comes with the processor, would be fine for this.

And what's your budget?

Danny75,
I don't have a budget, its open ended, the stock intel fan would be fine or another would be ok too, as long as its quite and reliable

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4590 3.30GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £145.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £114.98
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
1 x Gigabyte H97-HD3 Intel H97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £74.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G1600HC9DC01) £55.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 450W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
Total : £526.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The i5-4590 is the newer version of the i5-4570.

Specced a quality 240GB SSD. There are cheaper models available.

Motherboard has D-Sub which your RGB (VGA) connector should fit into. There are cheaper H81/B85 models if you prefer.

Specced an 80+Gold PSU with 5 year warranty. 450W is more than what you need, but there's only £5 between it and the 350W model.

And actually just saw another thread where the Z97 Gigabyte Gaming 7 motherboard is mentioned as coming with free 8GB 2133MHz RAM. It's overkill as you won't be overclocking with a non-K chip, but it's only £10 more than the basket in the post above and brings more features, better sound etc.

1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 450W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99

That mobo+RAM combo is a brilliant offer which I would go for.

Danny 75,

Thank you so much the spec is perfect, I agree the Mobo + Ram deal is great, all I need now is a SSD conversion bracket, and I'm more than happy.....thanks again and regards, john

From your description i think you'd be better off with new cpu cooler and ssd. You may find it to be fast enough for what you need. Of course buy a cooler that can be used with future upgrades.

If you just wanted something new then just go for it.

Also it might be a good idea to give it a thorough clean. Dust retains heat
