Fantastic that is all i can say ... one small issues .. I have a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P X58 mobo and the onboard sound is enabled ... I have an X-Fi installed and can't find any way to de-activate the onboard sound. I have looked at the bios and can't find the option ... I've looked at the mobo manual and can't see it anywhere .. can somebody point me in the right direction please

Get some pictures up :)

Have you installed the X-Fi software?
What OS are you running?

I take it that by on board sound you mean the Realtek Audio device?

If so, have you used the Control Panel option to select the default sound device? In your case X-Fi

control panel - type sound in search box - manage audio devices

The only other thing that I can suggest ... is making sure you have some sort of input/output device connected to the X-Fi, speakers/headsets and mic. Open the X-Fi software/application and search for a "set as default" or "setup" option.

It's one of those real bugger problems that usually experimenting finds the fix.. sorry to be of not much use!

I can see that there is a "Creative SPDIF out" in device manager but nothing else? I have tried to open the software but it states that there is no device attached. I tried an update but with the same results.

While I was browsing I did notice there are compatability issues with Gigabyte motherboards and the xfi. It may be worth your while finding out specifics and returning the xfi or motherboard for an alternative

Usually a good install results in all the other stuff being disabled so I think the best thing to do is uninstall it all and start again - too deep messing with BIOS and it shouldn't be necessary so reset everyting you changed.
If you card isn't listed in DM (Device Manager) then Winders hasn't found it yet.
Power down > remove card > boot up > power down > insert card > boot and check again.
Go to Creative and d/l the latest drivers first, note where they are.
Remove the card and reboot to let Winders find it.
If it asks for the drivers point it in the right direction.
If it doesn't ask, go to DM and see if the card is listed.
If yes, right click the card > properties > update driver > point to your download. If no, try it in another PCI slot if you can - even temporarily
This is a normal software installation and you shouldn't have to access BIOS.
Edit: PS.
In Programs > Creative do you have the Diagnostics which is part of the installation?
If not, this can be installed selectively from the installation CD. Install and run.

ok I'll give that a go first ... funny that the device manager is eeing SPDIF from creative and nothing else though ... stay tuned and thanks for your help. ... much appreciated indeed :)

right i thought i had it there for a moment ... I uninstalled all creative drivers and programs. Shut down, rebooted and it started searching for drivers ... it then assigned a windows generic driver before I could do anything ... I uninstalled the driver and started up a creative self install driver ... but it didn't work. I'll keep trying, I didn't want to remove the card If i could help it.
