Hi,

I've recently bought parts to build a new pc (first ever build) and I've put everything together but been experiencing a few issues with it.

Here is what I've bought

Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6 Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail
Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX 1333C9DHX Twin3X (2x2GB) (TW3X4G1333C9DHX)
Netgear WG311T 108Mbps Wireless Desktop PCI Network Adapter
Western Digital Caviar Blue 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD2500AAKS)
Samsung TS-H653B/DEBH 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Antec Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
Antec Quattro 1000W PSU

Along with that lot I also got the keyboard, monitor and Windows XP (Vista isn't ready for a couple of the programs I use on my PC.
As far as I'm aware (I checked before hand) that all the parts are compatible with each other so I shouldn't think its that (but I could be wrong).

I put together the cpu onto the mobo, added the ram, connected the graphics card and wifi card onto it and hooked up the power. I added one HD and the dvd drive. After which I powered up or at least tried to. The computer started, things whirred into action but within 10 - 30 seconds the power had died on me and so the process repeated. I sought advice from a friend who advised to remove the DVD drive and try again. I did so and managed to get the bios menu. I reset, connected the DVD drive and booted again. It worked so I formatted my HD, installed windows, got my wifi card working and eventually got all the additional drivers windows was asking for.

I thought everything was ok so hooked up a few of the fans from the case but when I restarted the same start, restart happened. I took off the fans again but still it wouldn't get through to windows.

After that I went back to basics, with just the HD, graphics card ram and cpu connected. it started. I went to the bios to load fail safe settings, reset and it was ok for about an hour or so, so hooked up the DVD drive, that was ok, reset went into bios load fail safe settings. reset and back into windows. no problem. the following day I started the pc up and it went back to the start, restart not being able to reach the bios screen at all.

So I thought a simple removal of the DVD to get back to the basic set up would work but it didn't. I haven't been able to get back to the bios screen or into windows since and thats about a week now.

Since this is the first build I've done I'm not too sure where to begin with trying to solve this issue and ultimately get my PC working again.

right did you use a anti static wrist band or a magnetic screwdriver if you didn't use a wristband or you didn't earth your self you could have fried the mobo and the cpu and same with the screwdriver and when you turn it on dose it beep if no then its fried

I always made sure that I'd earth myself on the casing before changing / fiddling with any of the parts. I've had the system for now 5 weeks. it didn't work to begin with then I managed to get it booting normally for a few days then it would go back to the start stop during the power up. sometimes it would 'freeze' windows then I'd have to manually reset but it wouldn't boot normally until I stripped it back to the basics and go through the process again. I thought I had made progress last week but with it not starting again I dont know what exactly the problem is.

Have you checked your RAM voltage?

If BIOS is set to auto, then it may be under-volting. Check what the rated required volts are and manually set in the BIOS.

EDIT: May also be worth trying one stick of RAM, each at a time to see how that goes.

I've tried using just one ram stick but the mobo doesn't want to start up like that, and at the moment I cant even get to the stage where I can access the bios as the system just loses all power during the boot up. I'll take a look at the heatsink see if theres anything wrong with that but I've barely touched the cpu since installing it.

Have tried testing out of the case on a carboard box, make sure all electrical power connections are firmly in place including the 4 pin or 8 pin for the cpu power.

Got some good news, I took the fan off the cpu and put it back on, double checking that it was securely on and I am writing this message on my new system. I'm not getting my hopes up too much just yet as I'm still to connect the case fans up which up until now appears to be a stumbling block. But if i have already sorted out the problem then I should be ok from her on in. Since this is my first build i dont have another PSU to try out.

it would have been the cpu overheating then good luck

Funny you should mention the cpu temps, cos I've got a wee app called sensor view and it never went over 30 degrees for the cpu temp in the time that I had the computer working. I'm in the middle of getting things connected up so hopefully I can enjoy the pc a bit more now. Its been 5 weeks of frustration since I've had these niggling problems. Thanks to everyone who suggested things for me to try. Much appreciated.

Couple of other programmes to try for checking cpu temps are:
Real Temp
Core Temp & Hardware Monitor.
