Looking at talking to people who have actually implemented some new technology in the areas i'll list below.

This is all in relation to a manufacturing/industrial environment as this has quite big implications on some of the technologies...

A couple obviously relate to reducing cost within an IT department.

RFID (Radio frequency ID)
Wireless (Secure encryption only, must be government approved)
Handheld / portable devices
Telephone/PC connecivity (VoIP)
WAN/LAN
Use of open sware (sharing of source code amongst companies)
Touchscreen technology
Digital Signatures
Voice activated technology
Thermal Imaging/photography/digital imaging

I'll really appreciate it if anyone who's got experience with the above areas can throw some input in and if you want to talk outside of this thread, let me know and we'll sort something as it's more than likely easier.

Cheers :D

Can chat a bit about Open Source (if that's what you mean by SWARE) and IP Telephony. Looking after the kids thos so will try to return later. We've recently had IP phones installed at work. They are awful. You can hardly hear anyone on them. That's increasingly a problem as I have meetings with people on the phone (voice conferences - take a look at BT Meetme). An IP phone and conversations between UK and Indian staff are entertaining as it's difficult to understand anythiing unfortunately.

That's quite disheartening about the VoIP stuff.

Have you worked out why you're getting such problems? I'm looking for people who've had a success with the VoIP migration to help establish what hardware and infrastructure they've used.

We're looking at migrating a number in the few thousand of phones to VoIP

I'm a user rather than someone who installed it. But our network infrastructure in the building is not the best. We have probably somewhere around 800 to 1000 people in the building. It would probably be fine if they had a separate network for it. But they didn't. As it's an IT building every other person is accessing a network server at the same time. There just isn't enough bandwidth. It's a problem with our network though to be honest.

Working with cisco IP 7940's, 7911's and 7912's atm in work. Set up a fair few of them with the cisco phone management utility. Very handy stuff. I have no experience in setting it up server side but if you want to talk about client side stuff then feel free to add me on msn :)

Have just finished the rollout of a 4000 extension VoIP system (including a complete LAN re-switch), my email addy is in trust if you want to fire any questions across.

ip Phones are great here, using Cisco stuff. (mine is a 7940)

I would look at Thin Clients if you want to reduce cost/maintenance. Wyse Thin clients are the industry leader, and can probably help you with all of the above with a XPe based unit.

They really are the way forward...

(yes i do work for them, but not in sales :p)

We installed them at school last summer and they are terrible. We have had people from Wyse and Citrix come in countless times and still issues with them persist such as printers being found and then lost randomly and the system crashing. Suffice to say they will be removed from the curriculum side this summer and replaced with normal computers.

Yeah that would be great, i'll send you an e-mail shortly.

I'm just trying to find some reading material so I can get an initial understanding of how a typical business VoIP network is setup. It's not a area I know but about so i'm doing some research :)

Which school is that?
Oh, and dropping printers, thats almost certainly a problem with a poorly patched/implemented citrix setup!

I have only ever seen a Wyse terminal crash and lock up when it had a drink spilled in it...

I can chat about RFID and Voice Activated Technology. Finished a project recently for a large car manufacturing company that used RFID, and just wrapping up a project of Voice.

What were you using RFID and Voice stuff for exactly?

As said, they have had people from Citrix come in to try and sort it and every time they can't find a solution.

We have 90 of them with 3 load balanced Citrix servers. They constantly lock up with normal use, just word for example. They crash if you try anything above word and light internet pages. Most annoying and persistent problem is if you are typing in word it will suddenly stop responding to keyboard inputs for 5 minutes but you can still click.

I don't suppose you could post your e-mail or should I send it to the one in your Trust, i'd rather not have mine on here as it'll be from my work E-Mail :)

We have had the odd terminal crash but its pretty rare.

But due to price we mainly use VXL Terminals now.

Send it to the one in my trust and I'll reply with the basics of what I did. :)
