Ok I thought I had best try this out after reading loads about it but I have some niggly bits that I think should be easy to resolve(I hope)

I did try the IE7 Beta when it was first launched and quite liked the option of being able to close a tab just by clicking the cross at the end of the tab.Is there an extension or a setting to allow me to this in FF?

Secondly I would like to have my bookmarks in the bar at the top like you do in IE(I know I shouldnt but I am old and stuck in my ways)

If I can sort those two problems out I will probably ditch IE as I do like the other bits of FF :)

Thanks

Steve

Welcome to FF :)

1. In FF, you can close a tab by just middle clicking it with your mouse wheel :) Middleclicking any link with that same wheel will open that link in a tab.

2. Not sure what you mean about the bookmarks being at the top, since IE7 Beta3 won't even install for me. The way I have always had FF setup, is to have my bookmarks folders right at the top of the screen. (i'll upload a pic in a few mins)

To move buttons, and gui bits around, right click any of the buttons in FF (e.g stop/reload buttons) and select Customise. From there you can drag any of the toolbar bits anywhere you wish. To get my bookmarks at the top of the screen, I just drag the Bookmarks Toolbar right to the top.

Just to add to what Kainz said;

For the tabs I have the tab clicking options and tabbrowser preferences extensions installed. You can set them up how you want, for example I choose to double click to close them but you can set how you want it. These are also good for setting rules about how new tabs open and what links open in current tabs or new tabs.

This is my bookmark toolbar folder. Follow Kainz's instructions if this is what you meant

In Firefox 1.5.0.x, you can close tabs by clicking the cross at the far right hand side.
In Firefox 2.x, you (by default) get the crosses on each tab.

Thanks guys thats a great help.

Intrigued by what Tolien has said about 2.x have you got the option to add that function to 1.5?As that is the version I am using.

It all seems highly customisable is there any must have add ons?

All I have done so far is change the GUI colours from default.

Thanks

Steve

Unless some of the extensions do it, not really.

I find it much quicker to double click anywhere on the tab than on a small icon but each to their own :) You can't put a cross on the tabs using the extensions I use but I believe you can using tab mix plus.

As for other extensions check out this thead, most essentials will be mentioned.

i also have a firefox n00b question... can you get rid of the bookmarks toolbar folder from the bookmarks drop-down menu? i dont use the bookmarks toolbar so it just bugs me that it's taking up space on the drop-down menu. :/

Again - welcome to Firefox :D

I find the following useful

All -In-One-Sidebar - gives you access to all you bookmarks, extensions etc making the easy to navigate and update.

Restart Firefox - Adds an icon to fire fox allowing you to 'restart' firefox after installing an extension

Tab Mix Plus - Gives you loads more options for you tabs - the best option will allow you to re-open a tab if you close it.

IE Tab - allows you to open IE only site in firefox, including the windows update site.

There are loads on the firefox website just install them ans see which ones work for you

Hope this helps

Rich

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Deleting_the_Bookmarks_Toolbar_Folder

To delete this folder, you must first designate another folder as the folder to display on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

1. Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks
2. Click on any other folder
3. Edit -> Set as Bookmarks Toolbar Folder
4. Delete the folder called "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder"
ah, cheers for that.

I wouldn't use Firefox 2.x if I were you - it's not production, it's still Beta. Stick with the current stable version, 1.5.0.4 (I think).

I have quite a few useful extensions, and over half of them are broken with 2.x... 2.0 final will be along before too long, just be patient. As it is, 1.5 does everything you could possibly want - there are even extensions available that deal with the memory leakage issues that some people report.
