i just built my first ever pc and as my motherboard (asrock fatal1ty z68) has buit in auto clocking i thought ide give it a go it all seems to be working fine so far its clocked my 2600k to 4.6ghz atm at 1.29 vcore.

but when i decided to run prime to test how stable it is i always get one or two threads that error out and stop. is this the overclock being unstable or is it something else

It indicates the clock is unstable try setting the clock manually and upping the vCore an increment or two from 1.29V.

If the above seems confusing (as you willl need to up the multiplier to 46, disable spread spectrum etc...) i'll search out a guide for overclocking an SB setup.

EDIT: And welcome to the forums.

Here you go - the following guide gives you a general understanding of how to clock an 1155 setup using p67 boards. The general settings and principles are the same as for the z68 - it gives examples on 3 different boards (MSI, Asus and Gigabyte) - link.

Hope it proves useful - post back if you get stuck or need more advice - there's always someone lurking.

Got any idea why cpu-z says my core speed is3.8ghz when the multiplyer is set to 48?

Your PC will automatically downclock the CPU when it's idle to reduce power consumption. Known as Intel EIST.
If you put it under load the multiplier and thus the core clock should jump back up to normal.

It's not that.

If it was Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) then the CPU would down clock to ~1.6GHz.

It could be downclocking due to power issues. I have a similar board and it does that unless you increase long and short duration power limits to around 200 each.
