New to RPG's....where to start?

Gotta be honest with you, I found blue dragon way way way too childish. Wasnt a fan atall, And i did play it for quite a while. Just didnt personally couldnt get my head around it. I was also not a fan of dragon quest on PS2 for a similar reason. Again though i tried to play it lol

I guess so when it is compared to LO, LR, ToV etc but I loved this charm and it really does fit the bill of accessibility and a gentle introduction to JRPGs. It's also a fantastic looking HD game and easily over looked when graphics awards are dished out.

I'm not sure where FFXIII fits into all this as I've not played it yet. It does sound very accessible (2/3 hour tutorial?) and could fit the bill. I'll probably be picking it up on the PS3 pretty soon though so I'll be able to compare.

Fallout 3 would be my pick for a newcomer to the genre. Nice balance of shooter and rpg, without going too heavy on either. Should ease you into how rpg's work quite nicely.

Oblivion is next. Getting quite rpg-ish now, lots of classes and magic use.

Mass Effect next. Maybe ME2 right after, if you liked 1.

Then Dragon Age, the best rpg this gen.

This is exactly what I was going to say, in the same order! :)

id of thought ffxiii would be a good place to start, although its quite complex battle system its very slowly accessed, id also reccomend dragon age, one of the best games this gen let alone rpg.

I am looking at buying an RPG for the Xbox 360, but as I've never played one before which title would you recommend as a starter. Also do all RPG's have to be played online as I am not an Xbox live gold subscriber. The graphics look good on the titles I have seen in the shops but you cannot tell from the screenshots or descriptions on them whether they would be suitable for beginners... ie Final Fantasy XIII
Western RPG's I'd recommend
Mass effect
Fable 2
Oblivion
Dragon age

Japanese RPG
Enchanted arms
Lost odyssey
Final fantasy 13.
Tales of vesperia

The ones I'd recommend most are dragon age, oblivion, Tales of vesperia and lost odyssey. FF13 may be a bit daunting with the grid system of levelling up and more complex mechanics.
Blue dragon may be easier to start off than Lost odyssey but Lost odyssey is the better game (not by a mile however since they are very similar and both great).

Fable 2 is the perfect RPG to start off with, it's all the basics of a RPG and greatly fun :D

You are not hindred by millions of options, it's one of my fave RPG's as it's what I call a plug and play RPG :)

Fallout 3 (three) isn't a great RPG. In fact the RPG bits are weak.

It's a nice game to wander around and explore a well realised post-apoc landscape, but the game bits - FPS combat, VATS - and the RPG bits - dialogue, character progression and choices - are lacking. Sorely lacking.

Seriously, F3 has terrible dialogue for the most part, is littered with plot holes and things that make no sense (esp the ending), and offers almost no meaningful choices to the player, either in terms of character traits or offering multiple playstyles or outcomes.

That makes it a bad RPG in my books.

The OP asked what would be a good rpg for a beginner. What would you recommend?

Well, since RPGs are pretty beginner friendly (hey, it's not an online FPS!), any good RPG should be fine? Sure there might be a learning curve, but that goes with the territory.

That said, OP asked for an RPG on the 360, and most of the good RPGs I've played have been for either PC or PS2. 360s have never been bursting with RPGs, have they.

There are loads of JRPG's on 360 for some reason, the amount that are actually good is pretty low though. Your best bets are probably:

Western: Dragon Age / Mass Effect / Oblivion
Japanese: Final Fantasy XIII / Lost Oddessy

Keep in mind that J and W rpg's are totally different games.

Hi All

Many thanks for the very helpful and honest replies, this was excactly what I was looking for. I bought Final Fantasy XIII yesterday from HMV, the assistant in there was great and really recommeded that I try it out and so far I'm impressed by it. I have always played 1st person shooters in the past but my taste in games seems to be changing hence the search for something different. I've heard others talk about how good RPG's can be but never gave them a try until now. So far FFXIII seems okay and the graphics are fantastic. I've noticed that HMV sell an official game guide too, as I'm new to RPG's do you think it is worth buying it or is it just a way of getting you to part with cash?

From what I've played of ff13 (about 12hrs so far) You really don't need a guide. It feels like ff for the casual gamer tbh lol.

Enjoy

Never buy a gameguide for your first playthrough, discovery is one of the best parts of the adventure! Keep in mind the battle system, characters, levelling system and equipment system has never been done before so everyone is new to it. It's not like the mechanics in shooters where it's pretty much 'played one, played em all', they're all very different and varied.
