New toy

Don't muck around with stage blah blah heads and a hot cam on carbs, just drop a yb in there and get some proper power. ;)

Car looks like an excellent starting point chap. Hope you learn to love breaking down in an old ford. :D

Pfft...16v transit engine.

Get a decent engine in it. Something not designed by Ford. 2.3 Duratec or 1.6 Zetec-SE.

Trying to do it as cheap as possible tbh, i'm not after massive gains, 130 ish bhp will be fine. Might drop a more modern lump in when funds allow in the future.
The escort is gonna be my every day car, and the MK Indy when it's finished, will be the hooligan car (160bhp/ 420kg) ;)

Please keep the Escort looking as it is ;)

If you want a cheap, reliable 130bhp, drop a Zetec out of a Mongdeo in.

Pintos are whores. You'll spend three nights a week in a rainy layby setting points and you'll get about 15mpg.

You can drop a Zetec in on stock EFI for what it'll cost you to get a pinto to a reliable 130bhp.

Or if you want a nice blend of old and new:

Zetec/Duratec engine, Type 9 gearbox, bike carbs (or twin Webers) and Megajolt.

Been looking at Megajolt a lot lately, for Ford applications it's almost rude NOT to use it, incredibly simple.

Is that the one that uses the EDIS kit?

Yep. You need Megajolt (£40 ish delivered from the States), EDIS (£5 scrappy), a TPS (couple of quid?) if you want 3D mapping, and er... that's pretty much it for Ford applications.

hmmm could be an idea. didn't think megajolt kits could be picked up for under £100 or so though, plus i'd need a new manifold etc.

Still undecided as to what route to go down.
Picked up some bike carbs, manifold and megajolt setup cheap off another site.
But still would need head and cam.

Do nissan 200sx lumps spin the correct way?
If they do i'm tempted to buy a rotten one and drop the engine/box et all in.
you can pick them up for 500 quid or so, and fabbing up engine mounts etc shouldn't be too much hassle.
