i obviously don't know any more details of the plans other than what is already out in the public domain but i imagine a new stadium is still viable without the regeneration given it will still be filled for every game and event held there, even with the teams current woes - but no doubt if the area was tarted up it would make the deal a whole lot palatable for someone like Ratcliffe as his greedy little eyes will see other opportunities to line his own pockets if they get the government on board with the regeneration package. And yeah, like I said, it's either pipe dream cos it's not gonna happen, OR tax payers money is going to be used in a way it's never been before, essentially paying billions to make a football clubs new multi-billion pound stadium viable.
by that metric, you'd have been against any calls for government support to regenerate the areas around the north of liverpool at the time everton were making their plans for a new stadium, given they were a failing team owned by foreign billionaires?I'm not against government funding to regenerate an area, I am against it to regenerate a failing football club that's owned by foreign billionaires.
for what it's worth, i personally think ratcliff is full of **** and every bit as bad for man utd as the glaziers but that doesn't mean he's wrong to be putting pressure on the council/government to support his plans for a new stadium. and everton absolutely should have tried the same when they were making their new stadium plans. i'd also hazard a guess if fenway sports group decided a new stadium was needed, they would be looking for government support to regenerate the surrounding area and rightly so in my opinion.
