New Trafford

And yeah, like I said, it's either pipe dream cos it's not gonna happen, OR tax payers money is going to be used in a way it's never been before, essentially paying billions to make a football clubs new multi-billion pound stadium viable.
i obviously don't know any more details of the plans other than what is already out in the public domain but i imagine a new stadium is still viable without the regeneration given it will still be filled for every game and event held there, even with the teams current woes - but no doubt if the area was tarted up it would make the deal a whole lot palatable for someone like Ratcliffe as his greedy little eyes will see other opportunities to line his own pockets if they get the government on board with the regeneration package.
I'm not against government funding to regenerate an area, I am against it to regenerate a failing football club that's owned by foreign billionaires.
by that metric, you'd have been against any calls for government support to regenerate the areas around the north of liverpool at the time everton were making their plans for a new stadium, given they were a failing team owned by foreign billionaires?

for what it's worth, i personally think ratcliff is full of **** and every bit as bad for man utd as the glaziers but that doesn't mean he's wrong to be putting pressure on the council/government to support his plans for a new stadium. and everton absolutely should have tried the same when they were making their new stadium plans. i'd also hazard a guess if fenway sports group decided a new stadium was needed, they would be looking for government support to regenerate the surrounding area and rightly so in my opinion.

That's the issue, regenerate what exactly ? The stadiums, always going to be at the arse end of an industrial estate, bound between a canal and a railway line. What do they want the council to pay for ? 5-star hotels and Michelin star restaurants or parks to serve the warehouse workers on their lunch break ?

This is what I do not understand. Links to old Trafford are fantastic already and there isn't really anything to regenerate. It is right on the A56 which goes straight into Manchester and the area has a retail park and a big KFC before the roundabout to turn off to the stadium.

The industrial area is getting a bit old and the roads around there could do with a bit of new tarmac but the whole area is a far cry away compared to something like Spurs stadium which is plonked in the middle of an entire dump.
