New TV 55" £1000

Was in RS for 2 hours today looking through the different options

LG 55EC930V - TV itself looks nice although not very keen on the shiny reflective finish, reflections are easily visible when the TV is on and because of the curve it makes them look like those funky mirrors which make you look fat/thin. The blacks are definitely much blacker and I can't fault the clarity it's quite stunning BUT the motion blur is horrendous, watching football it was so noticeable it hurt my eyes, even Ed Sheeran on stage had quite a lot of blur. Personally I definitely wouldn't recommend this TV if you watch lots of fast moving/action/sports.

LG 55UF860V - Colours are definitely flatter than the OLED TVs but as to be expected really, blacks are fairly good although I did notice quite a lot of edge bleed on the demo model, can you return a TV due to edge bleeding? I was impressed with the picture and for the price I can see why not many places currently have them in stock!

Another option I did look at was the Panasonic TX-55CR852B comparable to the above LG model for colours and clarity I just don't think the curved option is for me.

They also had the 4K OLED LG TV, simply amazing picture & colours but again motion blur was way too much for me.

Also looked at receivers the Yamaha RXV679, Sony STRDN1060 & Sony STRDN860 haven't researched into these models yet though.

EDIT/ I said I sit 10ft(3m) away from the TV and the guy seemed to think this would be too close for 55"? According to the guides I've found on the internet it should be fine?

You have said what i pretty much felt when i went to look

OLED nice, but not quite right/ready

i think i might go for the samsung h6400 1080 screen for £ 649 and wait for OLED to improve, though talk of CES in the next few days and new TVs being announced, though im not sure that will effect prices of the lower end of the market (not quickly anyway)

I showed this to the missus, think this is a pretty definitive look at distances

re your little review,
thanks, I do watch sport (UFC) and a lot of action stuff, and had afeeling in my gut OLED just isn't there yet,
I do like the curves, but the LG 55UF860V does get good reviews, I believe the curved version is the LG 55Ug870V so might look at that,

I know some people are saying, OLED is the future and LED/LCD is dying, but its not gone yet, and think its getting to its prime now, while OLED I think is a good year if not two years away from its prime

thanks again for getting back to us

OLED is most definitely the future, but it isn't there yet. I feel for people buying without viewing them first.

I did look at the H6400 but don't plan to change the TV again for a while so for the extra £150 I'd get 3D and 4K with the LG.

Thanks for the link :) Seems 55" should be fine when sitting 10ft, it's somewhere inbetween the different standards of 2.5 and 1.6.

I'm trying to remember if I saw the 55UG870V, I saw the older version of the 55UF860V, think it was the 770V?

I don't doubt OLED is the future but it's like the current models are in beta and agree it's going to be a while before they become main stream.

Now to research AV Receivers :p

Glad you found that link useful

If I find the telly I want in RS im gonna try and get a deal on this
Denon AVR-X2200W:D

If not then will be getting it anyway , gets very good reviews and only just recently come down from around £500 to £375

Good luck wth your amp hunt

Funny you should say that, I've just been looking at that model! I like the fact it's fairly plain on the front ( The RXV679 is cluttered and I don't like it) My only worry is the reviews seem to show problems with Sky :(

Also gone back to looking at Onkyo but it seems they don't use Audyssey anymore, so stopped looking at them.

I'm leaning towards the Sony STRDN1060, I like the plain looking front and you can completely turn off the display which will be ideal for night viewing. My only concerns are the fact it doesn't have Atmos or DTS:X.

I can't find out if you can turn off the OSD, I know on a friends Onkyo the volume etc shows up the screen. I'm not really keen on this so hope it can be turned off. It also only has one HDCP 2.2 output, not really sure this would affect me at the moment (It's for 4K stuff right?)

Have a look on the owners thread for the demon on avforums I watch it and have read thru it
I'm sure the latest patch fixes the sky problems but treble check that
I have virgin so not an issue although may well go back. To sky when SKYQ COMES OUT (4K Sky )

Also re Dolby DTS:X and atmos

You need to do your research but I have personally decided unless I can get it done Correctly I.e ceiling mounted speakers for atmos etc then I won't bother as cheap alternatives don't seem to be that great

RS are ordering in a 55UF860V, It's due in on Thursday and reserved for me until Saturday. I'm fairly happy to go with it, so longs I can control it seamlessly from my Harmony 650!

Still not decided on the AV Receiver, I might post a different thread for it to get some reviews and opinions of owners.

For the price you aren't going to get better than the X2200W, it has full HDMI 2.0a support on all HDMI inputs, the latest sound codecs and from reading at the AV forums the issues with Sky were fixed in a firmware update.

Could you do me a favour if possible and see if you can turn off the display completely rather than just dim it?

The display on the front you can. It has a setting where it comes on when you use the remote but then goes off a few seconds later.

Rung RS today to reserve a Denon X2200 unfortunately they've forgot to order in my TV so I can't collect it until the following weekend :(

Looking for a TV in the same price range. Went into Currys the other day and had a look at whats available. My 8 years old 40" Sammy bit the dust last week so looking for a replacement.

Saw this TV but how does it compare to the 860V listed in this thread that everyone seems to recommend. Have quite a lot of Panasonic stuff myself and it's fantastic. They were the daddies for plasma TV's but unsure of their LCD quality. Next to the 55" £900 Sony it looked the better screen and it is backlit. Downside seems the be the 3D is active but I am not too fussed.

It used to be very easy to compare features but it seems now every manufacturer use their own terminology.

Will be going into John Lewis on Thursday to have a look at the LG but they do not stock the Panny so will have to trust my gut instinct I guess.

The Panasonic I posted about wasn't the same model but it was fairly similar to the LG, although I wouldn't be keen on active 3D so that would put me off.

Best thing you can do is compare the models. Do you have a local RS? If they sell the Panasonic that is. Or alternatively possibly you can compare the 850v with the Panasonic in currys.

Like always I ended up blowing my budget and bought the SAMSUNG SUHD UE55JS8000.

OLED seemed a bit too beta for me and too expensive for the size and requirements I wanted (4k). All the £900 TV's didn't seem much of a step up from £600 units. The Samsung SUHD seemed to be 90% OLED but at a fraction of the cost. Ironically Richer Sounds and JL customer service was fantastic but they were out of stock in JL and Richer sounds wouldn't take my gift cards that we received this Christmas so ended up getting it from Currys.

Buying a TV now is massive minefield. They all have so many pro's and cons I am still not sure I bought the correct one even after 8 hours trawling reviews, going to Nottingham and Peterborough to view in person!!! It used to be so much easier, Panasonic, Plasma and how deep your wallet is!!!
