New upgrade \ build - Advice Please

Additionally, I have one last thing to try before I get on the blower to OCUK.

My mate is going to bring his graphics card over later, just to rule out any incompatibility with my graphics board - highly unlikely but you never know. I've also ordered a beep\speaker for the new case (which I'll be keeping whatever the outcome) If there are any error codes being processed at power on maybe I can determine something from that.

Definitely worth a try - fingers crossed. If it boots, a quick flash would hopefully fix the problem - but not found any obvious issues with the 970 after a quick search.

If that doesn't pay dividends post in the Customer Services Forum and direct them to this thread - page 2 onwards :/ - and that will at least summarise the situation for them without you going through all the gory details. It will show that you've tried more than most to find a solution - and should make the rma process relatively painless.

The postie just delivered the PC \ speaker beeper. Plugged it onto the board and there's nothing when I attempt to boot.

I'll let you know how the graphics card thing goes tonight. The joy :)

Hopefully a very silly question indeed, but have you tried using another port on the GPU?

Hi Quartz,

Yes, tried both HDMI and Display Port connectors, also tried the DVI port (Through an adaptor) I just got my old IIyama out and plugged into that via the DVI and still no joy.

Just need to try another graphics card so I can rule that out.

I'll add that to the troubleshooting steps in post #43

Cheers,

You should get a single beep on a successful POST so the system isn't even starting the POST. I'm really clutching at straws here but are you sure the CPU is fitted correctly? Correct orientation? No transparent film in the CPU socket or anything?

I am absolutely certain that its seated properly. These things can't be mounted in incorrectly these day can they? - not unless you force it. It just kind of 'dropped in' without any effort both times (Original install and when I re-seated it when i took the water cooling off)

I've always had a habit of checking for bent pins or the like when I installed CPU's moons ago,I still check and found nothing untoward this time.

As I said, I'm clutching at straws here.

You me both matey.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I really do appreciate it.

I'm at the stage now where I think I've done just about everything possible !! I'll be contacting OCUK in the morning if the Graphics Card swap has no positive outcome.

Hello @obiwanquinobi`

Considering everything you've tried to your setup to post, I'd say something has died or is dead.

If you haven't done so already drop a thread in our customer service section? May be worth posting a link to this thread to save time. :)

It's true!

"Build it, and they will come."

Doesn't even have to work either :)

Kudos Damo - great customer service.

Thanks @Damo,

I've already sent a webnote this afternoon and linked to this thread. Shall I also post in the thread?

I was going to give your desk a call in the morning just to speak to someone also.

Cheers,

John

Did you manage to find time to swap cards?

Morning, @Plec.

Yes, my friend brought his spare 760 in for me last night. I kind of knew it would make no difference whatsoever, but you have to try to rule it out eh!?.

I think it's a dead board to be honest. I think the guys at OCUK are going to sort out an RMA. They've on two occasions asked me to check things that I've already checked - and subsequently documented in post #43 of this thread - which I directed them to in my initial web note.

Anywho, this isn't going to get sorted anytime soon so I'll continue to just use my trusty old (slow)HP DV7 Laptop to do menial tasks on (I've just had to order an SSD to put in there to make things a bit more bearable)

In the meanwhile, I've no machine to process photos I might take over the Bank Holiday Weekend or do my music studies on :( I could put my old PC back together but to be honest, I'm feeling absolutely exhausted with it all and haven't the energy to bother knowing that; when parts come back from RMA, I have to start the whole project\process all over. Fills me with dread - I hope its raining out when I'm forced to do it because if its sunny and I'm stuck messing around with a PC I'll be severely p*ssed off :D

Never again!! :) I realize that this sort of thing is enjoyed by many (The teething issues, troubleshooting, the elimination process..I used to love it myself) but it's not for me these days.

I'll be buying a pre-built machine for the next one (which will hopefully be another 7-8 or even 9 years time)

Keep you posted bud. Thanks for all your help (and anyone else that chimed in)

@Plec

Just thought I'd update you (Somewhat belatedly)

All sorted. The motherboard tested as faulty as suspected. In the meanwhile, I bought a Gigabyte GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 AMD B350 board which worked from the off and the system has been up and running and pretty stable (save for a few wee teething issues) for a few weeks now. I'm amazed at the difference the Ryzen 5 = 6 cores\12 threads has done for my productivity. Noise reduction and post processing of my photos has massively sped up and the general speed in everything I do has ramped up a lot.. I'm very happy with the build and as I'm not overclocking or gaming, its a lot quieter than the last tower I had - a LOT quieter. Love the NZXT Kraken AIO cooler :)

It was an unlucky break getting a dead board and it could have happened whichever platform I plumped for. The guys at OCUK sorted it quickly and didn't quibble when I asked for a refund rather than a replacement board. So all in all, save for the hassle of the repeated testing of components, the forum support (from you and the other members) and the RMA process from OCUK made the experience a lot more pleasant than it could have been.

Just thought I'd post to say thanks to all who contributed or posted suggestions when I was troubleshooting and also to the lads at OCUK who sorted out the RMA and the refund quickly.

Take care

John

Thanks for the update John - really pleased it worked out for you and that you're happy with your purchase.

I think Ryzen suits your needs perfectly - it seems to be a good fit to date - hope it carries on behaving itself!

Your reasoning behind the DOA board is valid - you continue to display that relaxed attitude/reasoning - kudos :)

Sit back and enjoy :)
