Is anyone looking forward to it? I had a look at their web site a few days ago and they seem to have added a new kernel, replaced a few of the apps and that's about it.

I'll d/l and install it any way of course ;)

I read an article in the new Linux Format in which Slackworth was quoted as saying they won't upgrade to Gnome 3.0 in the next release because of the 'potentially alienating desktop changes', whatever that means!

Im on the beta atm and it is awesome, first install of ubuntu where I have't had to touch a config file to get everything working.

As for gnome 3.0 I don't know about the "alienating" environment, but I reckon it would have more to do with this being a long support version of ubuntu. Probably safer to keep it stable by staying away from gnome 3.0, if it's even ready to go (Which I have no idea if it is).

I'm a bit concerned about the move to grub 2 and ext4 by default. Otherwise enthusiastic, my netbook needs a reinstall and this seems a good time for it.

I do like the periodic release cycle.

yes i do get excited about these releases for some reason!! nothing too radical has been changed from the looks of it though. I normally upgrade early and so would be well acquainted with it by now but ill hold on until the final release this time.

If you are already running ubuntu, and doing updates, you'll get 'the next version' anyway?

In other news Fedora 12 is either out now or will be in the next few days.

i'm on the karmic beta (have been since alpha), and can safely say it's the biggest step up in quality since hardy came out. Nothing but praise for every addition and change, with one exception. Grub 2 is not ready. It's not been shown to be stable, robust, or easily user configurable in the way that grub was so simple and effective. I'm glad I did a dist-upgrade and kept the old grub on my main rig. (Though ext4 is excellent, and I've been running it since jaunty beta)

from http://www.workswithu.com/2009/07/29/ubuntu-910-preview-grub-2/

"GRUB 2 can boot directly to ISO images stored on a local disk, meaning among other things that testing a Linux live CD is as simple as saving its image to hard disk and passing GRUB the commands to boot to it. No longer having to burn a CD or create a bootable USB drive in order to play with a new Linux distribution is a great improvement. This feature could also come in handy for rescuing broken systems using live CDs."

sounds sweet

:eek:Would that allow me to boot a custom XP install ISO using GRUB2 as a bootloader? Or is it restricted to Linux ISO's only?

I'm looking forward to this. I went away from ubuntu and towards Arch for my servers, originally because ubuntu seemed to be a bit heavy for my needs.

That said, Arch is annoying me enough that a move back might be on the cards. :)

This could be good. I missed out 9.04 completely on my work machine due to some compatibility issues so I'll be giving this one a go.

EXT4 looks good and any grub issues shouldn't really bother me as I don't use it for anything fancy.

got the RC - nice to see a fully working pulseaudio setup by default finally!! very nice new sound applet also. Looks very slick with the new boot scheme. This one looks to be a winner

I do like ubuntu but atm i am holding out for the next version of linux mint (like ubuntu but has flash and codecs etc... plus a nicer theme)

That's the beauty of choice isn't it? :)

Personally, I don't like Mint, I prefer Ubuntu but I can see why some people do like Mint. I enjoy having a little fiddle to get Ubuntu working just the way I like :)

Using Mint at the minute, but just ordered 100 CDs of Amazon so expect a lot more to be tried out :)

Damn this 0.5MBps connection speed. Have to break out the torrents again...
