New XBMC/Kodi box needed

you dont share it with kodi on the windows box, windows looks after the sharing, you go into kodi on the android box and add the windows share you created as a media source, as per the prev adding media source link.
The biggest thing that normally goes wrong is setting up the windows sharing. What OS is your windows box running?
Do you have another pc available?

Using kodi on the Android Box
Select system, and file manager
You should be able to highlight add source,ok/enter it
Then highlight browse, ok/enter it
Highlight windows network ok/select it
I have workgroup available, selecting that shows my pc my openelec box and my networked printer, what is showing on yours, ie your pc.

Openelec just came out for the Mini MX S905, Bluetooth and 4K output aren't working just yet but it's only been a week since the first beta release.

4k 10bit HEVC plays amazingly well, better than the Android version that comes with it.

Really impressed with this little box.

very interesting, thank you for sharing.

for £34.99 this box seems good value if openelec eventually gets officially supported.

i have been looking to upgrade my box and looking at the ASRock Beebox N3150.

I would prefer a platform where i can flash my own OS. I am not really keen on android os as it could sieze development at anytime especially when new hardware is released.

Sounds like you have password protected sharing still switched on.

Back to the windows box
Right click on one of your shared drives
Select properties
Click sharing tab
In the box at the bottom labelled password protection, click the link to
Network and Sharing center

Click the drop down arrow next to All Networks
check the setting for Password Protected sharing

Ive checked all that and everything is fine. I did manage to add my drives to kodi and now when i click a film it says film is not available would you like to remove it even tho there on my pc and when i click the location it keeps asking for username and password im lost to this cause all the settings are fine. I did what was asked for windows 7 sharing on kodi. I can't understand it cause it did let me add my drives. But back to square one again lol. It did say though couldn't connect to network server im wondering if its something to with windows firewall or something?

Well we've made progress you managed to add the drives and films.
Just need to get the connection stable.
Post your problem as above in the
Networks & Internet Connectivity
section of the forum. There's lots of clever fellows in there who should come up with suggestions of what to check.

So which box would anyone recommend to run kodi, is the Amazon box any good, I dont really want to pay through the nose for nvidia shield?

The problem is it depends what you are going to use it for.

The above may sound strange but for many users a fire stick will do everything they want. A Pie 2 is not a bad choice at the cheap end either.

An amazon Fire TV is a good choice and significantly faster than the above 2 but that only really matters for menus.

The problem comes when you try to do a little bit more than average.

Do you have a surround sound setup ?

Do you care about 24p ?

and an important one is what is your media.

Wirelessly streaming a 1 or 2 gig movie is simply not the same as streaming a 30+ gig ripped Blu ray and it is only getting worse.

100 gig H265 Movies exist and will indeed play on good enough hardware (a PC with a GTX9 series card or a Nvidia shield for example)

For me the minimum spec I would recommend to anyone at this point is , Hard wired so an Ethernet port and H265 hardware decoding.

So amazon Fire TV 4k, Nvidia Shield, Roku 4 or a PC.

These things are very much my hobby these days and honestly a good PC is still the best but the NVidia shield is excellent.

Cheers for the advice, I have a powerful PC that I use for gaming but the is upstairs in my room I don't have a surround setup on my 4K Tv and I would be connecting via Ethernet to my 80/20 fibre. In not sure £150 is worth it for the shield but I was looking at the fire 4K box for £80 which has support for h.265.
Really looking to use it for the footy and the odd movie to be honest but 24p would be a bonus.

The fire TV 4k has been around the the £65 mark a lot recently.
In fact it was 63 on amazon 3 days ago :(

It is probably the one to go for as the support is very good (I do not mean from amazon I mean from the likes of Kodi) plenty of info on this forum.

There are slightly cheaper android boxes with similar and even better specs but what matters most is the support they get from the community.

The amazon fires does quite well on this even though it is quite locked down.

You might be paying slightly more then the £80 your wanting to spend but the build quality is very good and customer support is good from what my friend says any trouble there forum are quick to respond i have the T8-V3 from droidsticks which is the same price but also great customer support and good build quality. The T8-V3 i have has the s812 chip where as the Minix u1 has the s905 chip and HDMI 2.0. both great android boxes from great company's. One note on the U1 at present kodi doesn't run the best at the moment that is no fault to the Minix. But kodi devs have to update for the new s905 chip but that won't be far away

Just to add, ive got an Nvidia Shield TV but running full Android 5.1 so no restrictions on apps that are only designed for Android TV. The only downside with the full Android is the shield controller loses its wireless ability (still works wired I think), but not a problem to me for the extra freedom. Also the remote still works (paired as bluetooth), and I actually use a Logitech K400 with mine which is even better.
