Hi all,

I'm off to New York on the 4th July (What a date to fly to America!), staying for 9 weeks on business (I'll be working 8am-6pm Mon-Fri).

I'm living on the Jersey City coast across the river from the tip of manhatten (Newport) and I'm working very close to World Trade Center subway/PATH station.

Can anyone give me any hints/tips on general living or where to go out etc?

I'm also looking for a decent place to buy a suit (I'm a 36 inch inside leg so maybe a tailored suit and/or tall specialist) while im there.

Thanks,

James

Some more tips for NYC

Couple of tips, sorted by categoy (going out, shopping, sightseeing)

First of all, how lucky you are to be spending 9 weeks in such a fantastic city...

Now for the tips... The other posters make some good points, just wanted to throw in my suggestions:

Shopping

Start with Century 21. It's a large store pretty much opposite ground zero which has all sorts of goods at very nice prices if you don't mind the displays being rather less well thought out. They have all sorts, also overcoats, suits etc.

If not, then Macy's at Herald Square (34th st and Broadway). Enormous department store with just about anything you can think of. Although maybe on the expensive side, wandering around midtown (from about 30th to 59th st. 4th to 8th Avenues) has loads of shopping...

Sightseeing

I know it's a cliche, but you must at least once go up the Empire State building (34th st and 5th Avenue). Also there's the USS Intrepid on the very west side on around 45th street...

Going Out

For nice restaurants and some decent bars Chelsea and Greenwich Village are good bets. For some very happening and 'in' places start with the Meatpacking district which is centered around 13th st. and 9th avenue. There's a hotel there called the Gansevoort which has a great bar. From there you can move on to the clubs and bars which are concentrated within this area. A nice place for a drink on the quiet is in the Marriot Hotel Bar overlooking Times Square watching NYC bustle on by...

Travelling

Using the subwway is really the best way to get around. It's easy to figure out and relatively inexpensive. Cabs are cheap compared to europe and alwasy abundant, any time of day or night. Just remember that it's customary to tip.

Hope this helps, if just a little.

I wouldn't bother with the Statue of Liberty ferry, it's not worth going out to the island itself, and though the included trip to Ellis Island is interesting, it's bad value for the $17 ticket.

Food and things increase dramatically near the big sites, a couple of blocks away and you might save yourself a few bucks, though it's cheap anywhere compared to UK prices.

There is a Jewish tailors i nearly bought a tailored pinstrip suit from for 120 dollars next to the empire state building, not far from a foot locker if i remember correctly.
So gutted i didnt, but was short of cash.

NYC is hot, humid and full of annoying tourists wandering along the pavement, I wouldn't go there.

The ESB is between 33 and 34th on 5th Ave...The Intrepid is currently docked in Staten Island for refurb.

Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue and a helicopter ride to see the city.

Madison Square Gardens for any basketball if its still on!

Rileys for good electronics stuff ;)

Century 21 for clothes.

I didn't really go out drinking out there - was mainly shopping ;)

couple of tips.

1 make sure you go up he empire state, the lift is awsome, you start of floor 1 ..2..3..4 10..20..30..40..50 you start doing like 10 floors a second. super fast lift, and make sure you take a paper air plane to throw off the top!

2 which i think is the most important,in your first few weeks if you take a camera DO NOT i repeat DO NOT hang it around your neck or you will be pestered by people selling coach tours around the city all day long, try to look not like a tourist. the guys are on nearly every corner.

3 remember cars can turn right when the walk sign is on to cross the road but they have to give way to padestrians.

4 prepair for a lot of horn beeping

5 police have guns!

boating lake at central park is good about $12 for an hour
get up the empire state - take some music with you
amazing restaurants little italy, greenwich village and chinatown - you will be amazed at the quality of the food.

if you get a chance one evening get to the

FAT CAT JAZZ CLUB 75 christopher street 7th avenue

http://www.fatcatmusic.org/

- they have open plan table tennis, pool, shuffle, table football, chess, net and all while the band is playing!

As always OcUK never fails to disappoint! Great tips there - thanks all!

I can't wait to get over there and see the sites etc.

Is it always shorts/t-shirt weather over there between july-sept? Just thinking about what to pack!

All good suggestions so far - anyone else got anything to add?

Heading off in 3 days!

(How long do these threads stick around for - I've bookmarked it but will it disappear after 30 days?)

You've got to do the Empire State Building, but for the best photos, go to the top of the Rockerfella Centre.

Great views of Central Park (which you could probably spend a day or so in in it's own right) on one side, Jersey on another, Downtown Manhatten on another (including spectacular views of the Chrysler Building and the ESB) and Brooklyn on the last side.

Well worth it, and if you don't have a decent camera, there's plenty of places to get one :D
